• Alternate Character Interpretation: Jeffrey Combs thought that his character's hatred for Quark was based on a contempt for an expatriate who was not a true Ferengi because he lived away from their homeworld among aliens.
• It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: A minor criticism of the episode is that Quark's becoming an outcast from his people had already been done with Worf (and twice at that), with Brunt's speech about the dire consequences that Quark and his family will face if he breaks the contract being lifted almost word-for-word from the speech that Gowron gave when he was threatening Worf with discommendation at the start of the season.^note (In fact, it was very nearly an even bigger example of this trope, as earlier versions of the script revealed that no Ferengi in recorded history had ever broken a contract; however, the producers realized that in addition to seeming implausible, this was too similar to Odo's becoming the first Changeling ever to harm another — which was key to the plot of the very next episode, no less — and removed it)
