YMMV / Star Trek: Deep Space Nine S02E09 "Second Sight"

  • Designated Love Interest: Fenna and Nidell are awfully flat characters, even by the standards of one-episode Star Trek love interests. Fenna is happy to flirt with Sisko and Nidell is sad to be married to Seyetik and that's essentially it for their characterization. This issue robs the episode of its intended impact; it's hard to believe Sisko would be particularly sad to lose Fenna after she's revealed to be an intangible psychic projection without any life experiences to call her own.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A starstruck young woman marries her much-older idol and discovers the relationship is not all it's cracked up to be, but is then trapped by the strictures of her society. She represses her feelings so hard that they eventually manifest as a whole separate person, but her inability to acknowledge her own needs and desires is now actually killing her. There's a perfectly good plot here from Nidell's perspective, but she's almost completely absent from her own story. We never even hear from her that she's unhappy in her marriage, it's Sevetik who tells us who he thinks she is and decides what to do about it with zero input from her. Him bulldozing the situation is consistent with his character, but denies her any agency. Also, if Fenna had a more specific personality and interests, showing all the parts of Nidell that she has crushed in order to survive in her marriage, it would make much more sense that Sisko was worried about losing "her" and provide the bittersweet ending if Nidell's life is saved but she still can't fully integrate and acknowledge her buried self without a long time in therapy, so Sisko has to let her go.
