YMMV / Star Trek: Deep Space Nine S01E07 "Q-Less"

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Going to the Delta Quadrant with Q? Bah! Like that'll ever happen!
    • Lower Decks would much later also feature an episode where Q's contribution is to show up, contribute nothing to the plot, and simply annoy any nearby Starfleet officers. The 2022 IDW comics series would also do a gag featuring a list of reports from various Starfleet officers on Q's exploits, strongly implying that Starfleet considers him potentially dangerous but mostly annoying, tending to show up to distract them from important work.
  • Memetic Mutation: Whenever Trekkies are reinforcing Sisko's Memetic Badass status, they'll almost always mention that he straight-up punched Q in the face. Some Moments Of Awesome just live forever.
  • Misblamed: The infamous science flub involved in Bashir's "mistake" on his final exam has generally been blamed on the episode's writer, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, when in actual fact it was committed by series co-creator Michael Piller — the flub in question originated in a deleted bit of dialogue between Bashir and Dax in "Emissary", which was later transplanted to this episode. That being said, Wolfe's taking the flack for the mistake (including from his wife, a veterinary student) motivated him to pull an Author's Saving Throw in Season 3, which would be taken to even greater levels in Season 5.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Q has almost no impact on the plot beyond trying to badger Vash into going exploring with him again, and occasionally insulting the station's crew for not being able to work out what's causing the anomalies. Even the iconic scene where Sisko punches him to the ground (which in turn causes Q to remark that Sisko is easier to provoke than Picard) doesn't have any further bearing on the plot.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: While few would complain at the return of Vash and especially Q, many feel including both of them in the same episode squandered the opportunity to utilize them to their full potential, as the episode had to split its focus between both characters.
  • Watch It for the Meme: Even for the clunky season 1, this episode isn't one of the more popular ones, and is chiefly notable for the brief showdown between Sisko and Q. In particular, the punch heard round the quadrant.
