YMMV / Spree

  • Anvilicious:
    • Jessie's speech at the comedy club pretty much spells out the movie's aesop about the lengths people will go to to get attention.
    • During Kurt's spree, his viewers regularly insult him and his victims, and treat his murders as entertainment to the point of voting "yes" on his poll over whether or not he should kill Jessie. The commentary on the toxicity of people online and how people can be easily cruel to random people with the protection of anonymity is impossible to miss.
  • Complete Monster: Kurt Kunkle is a young, psychopathic "livestreamer" with a craving for fame and adoration. After years of failing to gain any sort of following across social media, Kurt decides to livestream himself going on a killing spree across Los Angeles, starting out by serving people poisoned bottles of water before branching out to feeding them to dogs or taking power drills to their skulls. Murdering over a dozen people through a single night and driving through a homeless camp to run down any vagrants he can, Kurt directs his attentions towards comedian Jessie, trying to kill her while bragging he'd even rape her if it would bring in more viewers for his stream. Kurt even reveals he kicked off his spree by murdering his mother, and rounds the night off by executing his cowering dad as well, cementing to all that underneath his friendly, energetic exterior, Kurt is a despicable lunatic.
  • Critical Dissonance: Critics gave the film mixed reviews, but the reviews tend to be surprisingly positive on Letterboxd (known for an arthouse cinema-loving user base that one could describe as... well, pretentious). Besides Joe Keery's strong lead performance, positive reviews often cite the film's genuinely good depiction of Internet culture.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Kurt running over Mario probably wouldn't be as darkly hilarious as it is if it weren't soundtracked by the Gummy Bear song.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Kurt doesn’t have a sense of humor, is perfectly willing to kill for fame, and is pretty awkward even when he’s being nice.
  • Fridge Horror: Men treat uNo like a sex object. Kurt's streamers tell him to "make a sex tape" with uNo. Later on, a cop (while supposedly making sure uNo is safe) takes a look at an unconscious uNo and says she's hot. Kurt goes around claiming that the unconscious uNo is his girlfriend while trying to drive to somewhere where they can be alone. Yeah, the implications of uNo falling victim to Attempted Rape (either by one of the cops or Kurt) are very much there. Kurt possibly having plans to rape uNo if he had managed to escape the cops with her unconscious is more or less confirmed when he kidnaps Jessie instead and starts ranting about uNo's sex tape, and how he and Jessie would "make love," and how he would commit rape just to become famous too.
  • Funny Moments:
    • The club that Kris takes Kurt to meet uNo is a strip club... without the strippers. It’s as hilariously awkward as it sounds.
    • Kurt berates Jesse for filming videos with her grandma because his own grandma is dead, thus the content is not relatable to him.
    • In the tie-in Instagram account, one of the videos posted has Kurt going to Kohl's... and finding a Steve Harrington T-shirt. Joe Keery’s reaction is priceless.
  • He Really Can Act: While critics were divided on the film itself, Joe Keery was near-universally praised for his charisma and commitment to his character.
  • Jerkass Woobie: There are varying degrees of this for most of his victims, but uNo is probably one of the bigger examples. She's vain and self-absorbed, but the comments on both her and Kurt's streams show that men treat her as nothing but a sex object. A cop who's supposed to be making sure she's safe takes a look at an unconscious uNo and remarks that she's hot. Given that East Asian women are hypersexualized, and this leads to lots of violence against them, it makes you wonder what harm could befall her or could've befallen her — whether it's with the cops or with Kurt. (Especially because his streamers were egging him on to "make a sex tape" with uNo and he would do anything for fame.) Even worse for uNo, it's possible she was arrested — after being the victim of one of the poisoned water bottles Kurt uses to murder people! — for being connected to the deaths even though all she did was ask Kurt to drive her around and take pictures of her. Call her self-absorbed and shallow, yes, but she certainly doesn't deserve any of this.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The fact that your rideshare driver could actually be a creepy Serial Killer willing to murder you and their other customers to get viral.
