Alternate Character Interpretation: Was SpongeBob really that uncaring towards Mrs. Puff's condition, or was he just too stupid to realize what actually happened to her? Possibly the latter given SpongeBob's poor social skills and (albeit unsuccessful) attempts to cheer her up afterwards.
Critical Dissonance: This is often considered by fans as one of the worst and/or darkest episodes of all time due to Mrs. Puff literally trying to get SpongeBob killed. Yet somehow the network loved it enough to give it a book adaptation (albeit rewriting Mrs. Puff's plan to make SpongeBob too scared to drive).
Fanon Discontinuity: A lot of viewers prefer to forget Mrs. Puff's murderous intentions and SpongeBob's nasty remarks in this episode. These were thankfully toned down in the book release.
Fridge Brilliance: While SpongeBob's remark that Mrs. Puff looks better with her inflation sac punctured may seem insulting, when one considers that the injury made her thinner, it could actually be considered a compliment (a socially awkward compliment, but a compliment nonetheless) on his part.
Fridge Horror: If SpongeBob did get killed in the demolition derby, then one could imagine how Patrick, Gary, Mr. Krabs, or even his parents would react once they find out he's dead...
Jerkass Woobie: Yes, Mrs. Puff tried to get SpongeBobkilled, but considering the crap she goes through during the show because of him (including getting injured and sent to the hospital multiple times and repeatedly getting arrested for stuff SpongeBob did), as well as what happened to her here, it's hard to blame her for going down the deep end.
Moment of Awesome: SpongeBob surprisingly winning the demolition derby and outrunning the mad Mrs. Puff because a) he's an invertebrate, making him too squishy to crush to death, and b) because he Drives Like Crazy, he's a completely impossible target.
Mrs. Puff is remembered by many fans for trying to murderSpongeBob, even if she has never acted this way before and after this episode.
SpongeBob is also remembered for his thoughtless comments towards Mrs. Puff, even though he was simply too stupid to realize the severity of her condition.
