YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants S 7 E 2 "Growth Spout" / "Stuck in the Wringer"

Go To

Growth Spout:

  • Fanon Discontinuity: Most people who ship Mr. Krabs/Mrs. Puff like to ignore that odd scene, where the writers seem to have forgotten that they used to date.
  • The Woobie: Pearl. Due to a growth spurt, she's trapped in her bed, constantly hungry and in a state of agony, her dad's greed only makes it worse. It's only with the help of SpongeBob does she stop growing and lose her hunger.

Stuck in the Wringer:

  • Accidental Aesop: Don't butt in and respond to other people's conversations, especially if you have no context of them whatsoever.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Was Patrick feeling genuinely guilty when he sees SpongeBob in a depression, or was he just wishing to have his friend back and learned nothing? Him suggesting the glue again at the end of the episodes suggests the latter theory.
    • Were the townspeople really speaking in Patrick's defense when he was told off by SpongeBob, or did they just use Patrick's meltdown as an excuse to rip on SpongeBob? Given how petty and self-righteous they tend to be, the latter is more likely.
  • Catharsis Factor: Given how insensitive Patrick was being towards SpongeBob at this point, it is quite satisfying to see SpongeBob finally tell him off for it.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Most fans like to forget this episode ever happened, due to Patrick's thoughtless behavior reaching its zenith, Spongebob getting Made Out to Be a Jerkass after calling out Patrick for ruining his life, and the infamous Spoof Aesop at the end about "crying solving all your problems".
  • Funny Moments: The bike rack gag is sometimes considered the funniest moment in the episode.
  • Misaimed Fandom: The episode ends with SpongeBob looking at the camera and saying, "I guess crying does solve your problems after all!" This message was obviously a sarcastic one, but many fans completely missed the joke. As such, it's one of the most hated lines in the series.
  • Never Live It Down: Some viewers will always remember Patrick for his actions here. Though he deserved the scolding SpongeBob gave him, Patrick only glued SpongeBob to the wringer out of stupidity than genuine malice. Some people also accuse him of having the townspeople turn on SpongeBob, even though he never actually encouraged them to do so, as he was already gone by then.
  • Signature Scene: SpongeBob telling off Patrick and then getting reprimanded for it by the townsfolk.
  • The Woobie: SpongeBob gets constantly humiliated no thanks to Patrick's stupidity and then gets ridiculed by the Bikini Bottomites for his condition.
