YMMV / Sponge Bob Square Pants S 6 E 4 Not Normal Gone

Go To

Gone:

  • Accidental Aesop: If you're going away for a while, it's best to let someone know in order to keep them from worrying.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Why is it that the Bikini Bottomites chose to celebrate a day without SpongeBob of all people, as no clear reason was given. Was it payback for a past event, like SpongeBob causing Bikini Bottom to get caught in a giant explosion, which happened in both "Dying for Pie" and "The Krusty Plate"? Is it because of that one time when he thought the everyone in town were aliens and stuffed them in a rocket ship to the moon? Or is it just that everyone finds SpongeBob annoying?
  • Catharsis Factor: While Patrick is the only one who pays for acting like this, after seeing him coldly brush off his friend's feelings of betrayal, even mocking him after joining in on "No SpongeBob Day", seeing Patrick get booted out of the bus when everyone heads off for "No Patrick Day" is pretty satisfying. To make it better, SpongeBob is the one who kicks him out.
  • Never Live It Down: "Gone" is regarded as one of the worst episodes, not just of the show, but of all time. The mean-spirited implications that everyone hates SpongeBob being the biggest reason. Unsurprisingly, the showrunners have distanced themselves from it as much as possible, as seen in the 20th anniversary special "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout", where everyone bands together to throw a special party for the titular character.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The first act of "Gone" is unusually eerie for an episode of SpongeBob. And just the concept of waking up one morning after everyone you knew had disappeared without a trace... terrifying.
  • The Woobie: SpongeBob gets abandoned by everyone (including Patrick) and goes insane from being alone for several weeks. At least he gets to partake in No Patrick Day.
