YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants S 6 E 1 "House Fancy" / "Krabby Road"

Go To

Non-YMMV examples go here.

House Fancy:

  • Accidental Aesop: While the scene is most likely intended purely for shock humor, it can demonstrate the lesson "for safety, wear closed footwear when moving or lifting heavy furniture."
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: "House Fancy" isn't a gross-out episode akin to "The Splinter" and the toenail scene is irrelevant to the overall plot, so unsurprisingly, many viewers found such an overtly graphic scene very out-of-place in what's otherwise a pretty standard SpongeBob episode.
  • Bile Fascination: Has landed itself on countless "Worst Of SpongeBob" lists almost solely due to the scene. For curious viewers, it is not for the faint of heart.
  • Broken Base: Some think that the episode is actually genuinely good, partially since Squidward actually wins for once in the end. Some people consider the episode mediocre, with people saying that other people overrate the episode merely because of Squidward's victory in the end.
  • Catharsis Factor: This is one of the few episodes that ends with Squidward winning, and it sees Squilliam suffer as massive Break the Haughty.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • SpongeBob accidentally ripping off Squidward's toenail with the foot of his own couch? Gruesome. SpongeBob doing it after misinterpreting Squidward's direction as "don't move it til I say OOOOOOOWWWWWWW!"? Hilarious!
    • Someone begging to be put out of their misery before dying? Not funny. A talking toilet begging to be put out of their misery before dying after Patrick uses it? Absolutely hilarious.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: While several other episodes are easily more despised than this one, it has often been on the receiving end of this almost purely due to the toenail scene.
  • Funny Moments:
    • To those with strong stomachs, the scene of Squidward's toenail being torn off can be considered this in a hilariously twisted sort of way.
    • After Patrick uses Squidward's toilet, Patrick warns Squidward that he shouldn't go in there "for days...or weeks". The toilet then comes out of the bathroom, starts wheezing and saying, "Please, please, somebody put me out of my misery!" and then dies in Squidward's hands.
  • Nausea Fuel: The infamous scene where Squidward gets his toenail ripped off is gruesomely rendered and detailed for some reason.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: This episode is known almost exclusively for that one scene rather than anything else about it.
  • Padding: You could cut out the scene and it would not affect the plot of the episode at all. Its only purpose is to fill out the 11-minute runtime.
  • Questionable Casting: More than one fan has been left mystified as to why the show didn't use famed celebrity chef Alton Brown for a role relating to the Krusty Krab.
  • Shocking Moments: What makes it stand out so much compared to other examples of Gorn and Gross-Up Close-Up humor in the series is just how random and out-of-the-blue it is. Other episodes such as "The Splinter" are (if nothing else) consistent with their Nausea Fuel, while "House Fancy" is a pretty standard SpongeBob episode that just so happens to include one of the most graphic scenes in the series halfway through it as essentially a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment.
  • Signature Scene: So much so that it colors people's perceptions of the episode overall, despite being brief and not at all consistent with the tone of the rest of the episode.

Krabby Road:

  • Memetic Mutation: Patrick playing the William Tell Overture on his stomach.
    • "Hey, Plankton, can our first song go like this?" (insert random song of choice)
