YMMV / Spider-Man: Friend or Foe

Go To

  • Camera Screw: Although platforming is very minimal, the nature of the game ultimately means that you have zero control over the camera.
  • Funny Moments: Any moment with the S.H.I.E.L.D. computer, which almost seems determined to piss off Nick Fury any chance it gets.
    • At one point, the computer appears to actually flirt with Spider-Man.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In the first Spider-Man movie, J. Jonah Jameson accused Spider-Man of working with the Green Goblin. This game gives you the option of having the two fight alongside each other
    • Spider-Man was conceived at a time when teenage superheroes like him were considered the stuff of sidekicks. This game more or less allows you to pair up Spider-Man with a sidekick of his own, and while its understandable for characters like Prowler, Black Cat, and anyone from Spider-Man's rogues' gallery, this game also has the likes of Iron Fist and Blade (both of whom have had solo titles) playing second-fiddle to the web-head himself.
    • James Arnold Taylor and Josh Keaton, who play Spider-Man and The New Goblin, aka Harry Osborn, respectively, eventually ended up switching roles.
  • The Problem with Licensed Games: Subverted. While it certainly doesn't live up to the gold standard set by the Spider-Man 2 licensed game, it's still a So Okay, It's Average action game at the very least, with the highlight of being able to play as Spider-Man's allies and enemies, and its only major flaws being too easy and too short.
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: The "hidden" collectables aren't really hidden very well, and you're likely to come across all of them when playing through a stage the first time around. Also, the penalty for dying? You lose a few Tech Tokens, and nothing more.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: You only visit a total of five locations around the world (granted, each one is divided into four stages), meaning one can beat the game within a few hours, grinding for Tech Tokens to upgrade characters not withstanding.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The game is very short and considered too easy, but the premise of playing as Spider-Man's friends and Rogues Gallery is fairly neat and the game doesn't take itself seriously, resulting in a good amount of humor.
