YMMV / Speech And Debate

• Just Here for Godzilla: Many former speech and debate and/or theater kids were excited by the trailer, understandably assuming the titular organization would be the focus of the movie, and it would be something akin to what Pitch Perfect was for acapella groups. Not so, as the actual competition takes up about five minutes of the movie, and the characters are forced to abandon speech and debate after that. Also, Diwata is the only main character involved in theater. Solomon is an introverted reporter for the school paper, while Howie is the gay, new kid in school just trying to fit in. This might have something to do with the mixed reviews the film has gotten, along with the major changes from the play's storyline.
