YMMV / Spacebase Startopia

Go To

  • Obvious Beta: The game infamously released in an incredibly broken state rife with glitches and bad code, and sadly did not receive a lot of support afterward. The behavior and pathfinding of in-game characters especially has problems; with them frequently getting stuck, getting lost, and getting stuck in a constantly complaining state even when the player provides them what they want.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The general opinion on the game is it is alright, but far inferior to the original game. Praise was given to its aliens and graphics, but the gameplay itself was criticized for being glitchy and shallow. A lot of criticism would also be directed to the games writing, with even those who like the game finding it annoying and immature, compounded by the grating voice given to VAL.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: While the original game had a lot of Black Comedy and a cynical tone, it helped balance it out with slapstick, absurdism, and making it clear that, despite everything, you were making the galaxy a better place. Starbase Startopia on the other hand gets far more nihilistic and mean-spirited with its humor, so much it makes the dark humor harder to stomach. It doesn't help the game brings out a Downer Ending that completely invalidates everything you've done.
