YMMV / Space Mountain

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • Michael Giacchino's scores for the ride at Disneyland/Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris are both incredibly and suitably epic scores that perfectly simulate the feeling of blasting through space at high speeds.
    • Back in the '90s, Dick Dale provided the ride with, of all things, a surf-rock remix of "Aquarium" from Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals, which has its fans to this day.
    • A 2007 promotion for Disneyland had both Space Mountain and California Screamin' use music by Red Hot Chili Peppers during the rides. In the case of Space Mountain, it was given Higher Ground. And yes, it actually matches up with the way the train goes.
    • Mount Bop, Mike Brassel's on-ride score for the Magic Kingdom version goes for a more electronic and atmospheric vibe that, although different from Disneyland and Disneyland Paris' orchestral scores, works just as well, especially in how it further highlights the sensation of blasting through outer space.
    • Of course all of these pale in comparison to Steve Bramson's De La Terre à La Lune, The epic orchestral soundtrack to the original version of Disneyland Paris' ride.
    • The 1984 off-ride score commissioned by RCA for Magic Kingdom's version. So awesome, in fact, that even after FedEx took over as the sponsor in 1994, the RCA music was left in place. Even to this day, the 1984 music is still playing, albeit only at the entrance and in the star tunnel.
  • First Installment Wins: The first version of Disneyland Paris' Space Mountain, aka, Space Mountain: De La Terre à La Lune is far more well-regarded amongst fans than Mission 2 and Hyperspace Mountain.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Nebula Ghost. A gigantic red/orange cosmic entity in the shape of a skeleton with electric powers that attacks the guests.
  • Signature Scene: The energy tunnel (especially the Florida version) is usually considered the most iconic part of the ride, especially since most advertising contains the tunnel.
    • The Paris versionnote  has the trains launching from the Columbiad Cannon, which can be seen from outside the attraction.
  • Special Effects Failure: Imagine riding the Florida attraction when the PeopleMover has a breakdown.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The original soundtrack for Space Mountain: De La Terre à La Lune contains some bits that sound almost exactly like John Williams' legendary score for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Many Paris fans were very displeased with Space Mountain: Mission 2, feeling that by it taking away most of the Jules Verne references, it stripped the ride of its unique identity and made it just like all the other versions.
    • This happened once again when it was announced that Mission 2 was to receive a Star Wars re-theme and become Hyperspace Mountain.
