YMMV / South Park S 1 E 7 Pinkeye

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Played for Laughs all around. When Wendy is turned back to normal, she doesn't comment on the pile of bodies surrounding her and the boys. She even gets in the mood for a Big Damn Kiss with Stan (even if that mood is lost after he pukes on her).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The zombie version of Kenny is arguably his most popular "alter-ego" (at least until Mysterion and Princess Kenny), and has a lot of merchandise and fanart based on it. Zombie Chef, Wendy, Pip, and Clyde are quite popular as well.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • After Weight Gain 4000 cemented her as somewhat of a Morality Pet for Garrison, Wendy unfairly winning the costume contest despite looking like everybody else can be explained as Garrison trying to make up for screwing her over at the essay contest in said episode, since we know Mr. Garrison takes these types of competitions very seriously.
    • Considering how zombie Kenny, Chef, and Wendy all retain some of their personality traits, zombie Clyde attacking Bebe directly can be interpreted as him lusting after her, which is shown again in Clubhouses and Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society.
    • Stan becoming more demure in regards to his relationship with Wendy in future episodes can be related to her breaking his trust in this episode.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Zombie Chef, in two different ways:
      • Seeing Chef become a zombie and sing a Thriller-esque song about how he's going to keep making love even after he's dead becomes a lot more uncomfortable after The Return of Chef, where he was Killed Off for Real and brought back to life as Darth Chef, with the promise that he was going to keep making love... to children.
      • When Chef becomes a zombie in this episode, he's easily reverted back to his usual self once Kenny is killed, with no lasting effects. When he becomes a zombie again in South Park: The Stick of Truth and breaks free of Clyde's mind control, he doesn't get to enjoy his freedom for long before he gets set on fire and killed again.
    • Zombie Pip could count as well after he was Killed Off for Real as well in 201.
    • Likewise for Zombie Clyde after his adult self's death in Post Covid: The Return of Covid, though he was far less sympathetic than the other examples.
  • Signature Scene: Kyle sawing Zombie Kenny in half with a chainsaw.
  • Squick:
    • Zombie Kenny ripping the scalp off of the mortician and the fat guy in hopes of getting to his brain. The mortician lives, and spends the rest of his screentime walking around with an exposed brain.
    • The aftermath of the zombie massacre, with multiple decapitated people turning back to normal but remaining dead and/or dismembered. Stan puking on Wendy is only the crowner this time around.
  • Special Effect Failure: In the scene where zombies invade the doctor's office, the door is clearly already in pieces before it breaks.
  • Values Resonance: The children all dressing up as a popular Star Wars character while anyone who dresses as something unique or less celebrated is treated as an outcast. Given how the Star Wars franchise would make a resurgence in the 2010s even bigger than before, "Pinkeye" can work as a commentary on how over-saturation affects kids. And even in the years immediately following this episode's release, any kid going to school with any merchandise related to Jar Jar Binks could look forward to a whole lot of ridicule.
