YMMV / Soldier Blue

  • Anvilicious: The film is not at all subtle in its intended condemnation of the U.S. government's past mistreatment of the indigenous population and the parallels to more modern war crimes in Vietnam.
  • Broken Aesop:
    • As pointed out by Roger Ebert in his review, the audience is supposed to identify with the Native Americans' suffering, but this point is undermined by the fact that the natives in fact play very little role in the narrative, with the focus primarily being on the white protagonists.
    • The film's intended depiction of rape as a horrific act of violence is similarly undermined by the fact that the Attempted Rape of Candice Bergen's character Cresta by a group of Kiowa warriors earlier in the film is presented as being comical.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: Note to the filmmakers — if the whole point of your film is that War Is Hell, then it's probably not a good idea to also revel in that very same carnage. It just makes you look like a bunch of hypocrites.
  • Narm: The sheer rabid one-dimensional savagery of the US cavalry soldiers during the final act of the film almost comes off as comedic for how over-exaggerated the violence is.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The massacre at the end definitely qualifies.
  • Nightmare Retardant: Similar to the Narm trope above, the massacre scene can be seen as so over-the-top in terms of violence, and the US cavalry soldiers so ridiculously evil, that it all almost comes off as amusing.
