YMMV / Snow White

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Ending: The original ending, where the queen attends Snow White's wedding, and is punished by dancing in red-hot iron shoes until she dies. Most find that far too dark, and it's commonly left out of adaptations.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Snow White is seen as extraordinarily attractive for her pale skin and blood-red lips. In modern things, this either brings to mind sickness or creepiness. This is a major reason why many rewrites and Fractured Fairytale takes depict her as more sinister than the original story (with some outright making her a vampire).
    • The story has been analyzed as having ageist qualities to it due to Snow White's beauty contrasted with her stepmother's.
    • Snow White is as young as seven in early versions of the story (and in others, she's often only fourteen), yet she still runs off with a prince.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Even the Brothers Grimm version is quite dark; Snow White's stepmother tries to have her murdered for being prettier than her, and tries to kill her three more times. She also specifically wants the huntsman to cut out the little princess's heart so she can eat it.

YMMV tropes present in the 2001 TV film:

  • Complete Monster: Queen Elspeth was once a hideous sorceress and sister of the Granter of Wishes, who was transformed into a beautiful queen to be the wife of King John and stepmother of Snow White. Obsessed with being the Fairest of Them All, Elspeth becomes furious when Snow White overtakes her for this title. Elspeth enchants Hector the hunter to kill Snow White and bring her heart, before eating the heart, then murdering Hector for failing. Upon being rejected by Prince Alfred, Elspeth transforms him into a bear and traps him inside a snow globe. She also traps King John in a mirror, where he is Forced to Watch as she explains her plan to murder his daughter. Elspeth was also responsible for transforming many of the dwarves native to the forest into inanimate garden gnomes, a process that's implied they remain fully conscious. Elspeth's personal attempts to murder Snow White include strangling her with an enchanted ribbon, before transforming into Snow White's deceased mother and tricking her into eating the poisoned apple. When Wish Granter reveals her evil deeds cost Elspeth her beauty, she attempts to murder her own brother.
  • Magnificent Bastard: The Granter of Wishes is an ancient sorcerer imprisoned within ice who is accidentally freed by John, the father of Snow White, where a grateful Wish Granter offers to grant any of John's wishes. However when John wishes for the return of his late wife, his "queen", Wish Granter states he cannot resurrect the dead, but can give him a queen. Magically turning John into a king with his own kingdom, Wish Granter turns his sister Elspeth into a beautiful queen for John to marry. Elspeth however turns out to be a Vain Sorceress who attempts to murder Snow for overtaking her as Fairest of Them All, while enchanting or killing many others who get in her way. Seeing how vile his sister is, the Wish Granter strips Elspeth of her beauty as punishment, and then calmly departs leaving Elspeth to her fate of being killed by her now freed and vengeful victims.
