YMMV / Slightly Damned

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: Rhea and Iratu used to be a very popular ship, due to the comic having a Minimalist Cast initially. However, with the reveal that Iratu is already in a relationship with Azurai, paired with Iratu's many Kick the Dog moments, fans quickly began to abandon this ship.
  • Accidental Innuendo
  • Alternative Character Interpretation
    • Is Buwaro's ditziness caused by damage sustained to his egg, by being bashed in the head with a rock repeatedly, or by being isolated for so long with no stimulation or education? Or is it just his personality?
    • Is Kinako covering her face in shame due to the accusatory glares of the the other angels. Or in despair after hearing that Lakritz (who is essentially her husband at that point) is probably dead at that time.
  • Angst? What Angst?: The middle head of Cerberus takes being a disembodied skull surprisingly well and even enjoys the company of Darius, who was responsible for his decapitation at the hands of Death.
  • Cry for the Devil: The last page of an epic Tear Jerker. Even after it all, it hurts.
    • Arguably inverted with Sakido, who in a flashback was shown leaving Buwaro to die, but earlier in the comic (later chronologically) died saving Buwaro and Rhea.
    • Very fitting: at the end of Darius's diary, Sakido wrote that if she was dead, she deserved it for how she treated Buwaro.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Thadius gets an amazing amount of attention and fanart, despite being a pet rock with absolutely zero lines.
    • This has died down for the most part, as Thadius gets very little time on-panel these days.
    • Lazuli is a fairly popular character in some parts of the fandom, as well as everyone under Iratu's command.
    • One wind demon in particular (given the placeholder name Birdeaux and later revealed as Cyran) has started to gather fan attention.
    • Sakido is practically the face of this trope for Slightly Damned (at least for the demons), especially since she was made specifically to be Killed Off for Real.
    • Azurai has recently started to gain more popularity from fans after spending more time in the comic and showing some redeeming traits.
    • Father Syndel quickly gained a fan following once his design was revealed.
  • Fan Nickname: Before Denevol's name was revealed in the comic, forum members tended to refer to him as "Chuck".
    • Chu said when his name was revealed they could continue to call him things like "Chuck Denevol" or "Chuckie D", though his actual first name is still officially unknown.
    • And when Moonshade showed up we got "Mr. Christmas".
    • Dariuth is one that the author herself started using when referring to Darius and Blue posing as Death.
    • Patch eventually became the official name for the wind demon shown on a commissioned height chart of elemental demons and angels, who eventually came to help Azurai in his capture of Kieri.
  • First Installment Wins: Book 1 is the most beloved part of Slightly Damned, with Sakido's death being treated as the most critical moment in the story. That said, fans have started giving the later parts of the story more love, with the Invasion of St. Curtis arc taking To Hell and Back's place for some fans.
  • Growing the Beard: The art, execution and effects have greatly increased since the comic started, especially the storytelling, just compare Rhea's dialogue in the first chapter to the more recent ones.
    • Also the scene where Lazuli destroys Thadius, injures and incapacitates Rhea, nearly kills Buwaro twice, and almost succeeds in killing Kieri.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Buwaro mentioning that he "never met a demon younger than him" takes on a depressing new meaning when we learn that most demons his age were killed in the same massacre that orphaned him and that fewer demon children are being born.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • A demon who is put through Forced Sleep lest they randomly attack others, and becomes a kind, protective soul when they wake up...we talking about Buwaro or Nezuko?
      • Remove the "demon" part, and this basically describes Tiki.
    • Lazuli being a crass, blue-haired psychopath who develops a murderous grudge against one of the protagonists for managing to grievously injure/permanently scar her, despite having gleefully curb-stomped that protagonist beforehand, essentially makes her the demonic, female version of Grimmjow.
    • Cliff Sinclair looks vaguely similar to Alastor Blight.
    • Lazuli's partner is an earth demon named Talus.
    • When Pokémon Sun and Moon were released, Chu drew artwork of Kieri in her rabbit form and an Alolan Vulpix they captured, with Chu saying they named the Vulpix Snowy, Buwaro's nickname for Kieri. In the Sun and Moon anime series, Lillie hatches an Alolan Vulpix of her own and nicknames her Snowy.
    • After she and Buwaro turn Kieri in to the demons in a Fake Defector ruse, Rhea laments that she's going to Double Hell.
    • A rude, murderous, dimwitted, foul-mouthed, temperamental sadist with a red-and-black color scheme? Azurai is basically Hidan in all but name.
  • Ho Yay: Rhea wants to avert this, but she doesn't quite manage.
  • Misaimed Fandom: A lot of fans root for the demons a little too much (especially members of the Furry Fandom.)
  • Moral Event Horizon: It becomes clear just how far gone Denevol is when he attacks first Kieri, then Cliff, just for protecting their friend.
    • Lazuli crosses it when she kills scores of innocent humans on her way to St. Curtis, solely to vent her anger out after losing to Kieri in a fight.
    • General Iratu and his soldiers razing and slaughtering several towns, including Weyville and St. Curtis, is bad enough, but personally attempting to murder Buwaro, his adoptive brother, in cold blood simply for bringing up their presumed-dead foster father cements him as irredeemably evil.
    • Azurai has several contenders, his two biggest ones being murdering the married couple who owned The Coiled Cobra bar and killing Kazai's boyfriend, Sanjulo.
    • Moonshade killed Rhea, his own DAUGHTER, just so he could be the only one with Moku's inherited powers. That's just pure evil, plain and simple.
  • Nightmare Retardant: Buwaro's latest berserker appearance is significantly less menacing that his first version or even his 'newborn' berserker form
    • However given Buwaro isn't a mindless killer this time around, it's likely intentional.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Don't let the comic's cutesy art style and comedic moments fool you. Between the surprising amount of blood, violence, and foul language, the horrors of Hell, a violent, Knight Templar angel society, a main character dealing with depression, suicidal thoughts, and Self-Harm issues, villains on both sides who Would Hurt a Child, a demon army's brutal onslaught of scores of innocent people, and Heaven's blatant use of Child Soldiers (with one of them shown getting brutally killed), it's made very clear that this is NOT a webcomic for young children to read.
  • The Woobie: Buwaro; Kieri, though she suffers less as the story goes on. It is later revealed that she was abused in Heaven.
    • Iron Woobie: Buwaro sure can take a beating. And still be smiling not long after. Kieri's no slouch either, with added asskicking.
