YMMV / Skunk Fu!

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: If you do something that is helpful and would save countless lives without the approval of your superiors, you must pay dearly! Even if you asked for said approval, but just got the silent treatment and were left to take a shot in the dark.
  • Common Knowledge: It was somewhat common to see people accuse the show of trying to cash in on the success of Kung Fu Panda. The latter was released over a year after this series premiered.
  • Cult Classic: While calling the show a classic would be a tad hyperbolic, it does have a small but devoted fanbase because of its endearing characters and appealing animation.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Epileptic Trees: To this day, people are still convinced that Panda is secretly a future Po.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Many who enjoy the series are also fans of Kung Fu Panda.
  • Funny Moments: Dragon in a party hat and blowing a noisemaker.
  • Informed Wrongness: The Big Bad, Dragon, is mentioned to have been "punished for his arrogance". In his full backstory, it's said that the valley the characters live in was under an intense drought. When Dragon asked the Heavens if he could use his water powers to stop the drought, the Heavens didn't respond at all. So Dragon went ahead and ended the drought with rainfall. The Heavens then punished him by stripping him of his water powers and trapping him in a mountain prison. So... he arrogantly saved the valley, apparently.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: It's hard not to talk about this show without mentioning Dragon's backstory at least once. He's even suitably reptilian!
  • Rooting for the Empire: After hearing how Dragon was imprisoned in a mountain for trying to help the valley, and seeing how much more unsavory the characters are than him, it's hard NOT to want him to destroy everyone.
  • So Okay, It's Average: What some people and most of the shows fans generally feel this way about it. The humor is usually meh most of the time, and there's quite a bit of jokes involving Skunk's "natural talent", but many consider it to have been at least slightly better than most shows on Kids' WB! at the time. A lot of the shows fans also consider the characters to be quite memorable as well.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: One of the main reasons some people are so hostile to the show is because they believed it was a cash in on another show about anthropomorphic animals performing kung fu that was wildly popular at the time. Some also accuse it of being a rip-off of Kung Fu Panda, but as noted above, Skunk Fu came a year before Panda came out.
  • Ugly Cute: Pig.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Though he does have his moments of cruelty, Dragon's story of how he came to be the shows villain does make some viewers side with him.
    • Arguably it's more a case of Values Dissonance. While Heaven's actions towards Dragon might seem cruel and unjust, one should remember that the series itself has its roots in Chinese and Asian culture in general which emphasizes authority as always being in the right which contrasts with the individualism and independence valued by western audiences.
