  • Artistic License – History: In his review of the book, Washington Post reporter Michael Grunwald (who wrote an extensive history of the Everglades titled The Swamp, released in 2004), argues that the Everglades Restoration Project created and funded during the Clinton Administration, was not primarily responsible for curtailing agricultural pollution of the kind that Red Hammernut is guilty of. Those efforts were carried out by the State of Florida, and (according to Grunwald) had already been largely successful before the Project was initiated.
  • This Loser Is You: In his review, Michael Grunwald objects to Hiaasen laying most or all of the blame for the destruction of the Everglades on Corrupt Corporate Executives like Red, when in real life the biggest cause for the Everglades' demise is the gluttonous consumption of fresh water by "John Q. Public" (the inhabitants of central and southern Florida's huge cities), water which would otherwise flow naturally to the wetlands.
