YMMV / Sistine Chapel

Go To

  • Broken Base: The restoration effort in the late twentieth century was highly divisive, as some saw its attempts to restore and brighten Michelangelo's colorful palette as reducing the complexity of the work and replacing Michelangelo's actual work.
  • Creator Backlash: Michelangelo hated painting in general and detested having to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling in particular, to the point where he wrote a poem about how much he detested it.
  • Creator Worship: Yes, but in addition, it isn't difficult to find statements that Michelangelo is "a god among painters" and it's a given that anything that looks like a mistake in his work for the Chapel is intentional and has a deeper meaning.
  • Hype Backlash: It's common to go into the Sistine Chapel expecting to be blown away by the mastery of it all, only to have difficulty taking all the artwork in when much of it is many feet in the air. Even if that's no obstacle, the many tourists always packing the Chapel will make it difficult to have any sort of spiritual epiphany while being there.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: The Sistine Chapel is a chapel, after all, but many tourists come to catch a glimpse at the famous ceiling fresco rather than to properly worship.
  • Memetic Mutation: While Sistine Steal is a trope in its own right, more humorous parodies of The Creation of Adam are popular enough among Internet forums and social media platforms to become a proper meme.
