• Anti-Climax Boss:
  • Rafi charges at the group, only to be taken out by Kassim.
  • The Minoton, a construction of bronze, powerful and nigh indestructible. Ends up crushing itself under a large slab of rock when opening a doorway in a pyramid.
• Retroactive Recognition: This was the first film role of Peter Mayhew, best known as Chewbacca from the Star Wars franchise. Specifically, Mayhew portrayed the Minoton in scenes where it isn't animated (namely in the long shot scenes).
• Special Effects Failure: Despite the flawless Stop Motion of Ray Harryhausen, the film suffers from a lot of green screen colour spill.
• Tear Jerker:
  • When Melanthius, as a test to see if the heroes are telling the truth, gets Farah to show Kassim his reflection in a mirror, poor Kassim is horrified at what he sees and actually starts to weep. It's really rather sad.
  • The Zenobia possessed Guardian of the Shrine kills Trog during the battle near the end of the film. This was probably the only monster vs. monster fight in a Harryhausen film with actual emotional stakes. Trog was their friend, and overcame his fear of the supernatural to come and help them. His death really is sad.
