YMMV / Shutendoji

  • Awesome Music: Even if the OVA series's animation and voice acting are nothing to write about, the soundtrack makes up for it quite a bit.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • In the OVA, after Kaji dispels the Genmashu illusions of the Demon Buddhists's female sorcerer, she utters in a shocked voice that he must be a Genmashu as well. Kaji is similarly shocked and is left musing about his true nature, implying his psychic powers might be somehow related to her dark sorcery. Nothing of this is explored further, among other things because he is killed later without much fanfare. It doesn't come from the manga either, as in both continuities Kaji is openly known to be simply an oni descendant with pretty regular psychic powers.
    • In the fourth OVA episode, Miyuki enters suddenly a prophetic trance to warn Dai Ankoku Shiya Jarai is coming. At the next moment she's fine again and her friends only wonder a bit before moving on and forgetting about it. This is never explained, not only because she's supposed to be a regular human, but also because it is completely superfluous: they know perfectly the great demon is coming.
  • Complete Monster: The OVA version of Majari Yonen, leader of the Jashinkyo cult, is an Oni who wants to summon the seemingly powerful Jarai and his forces of darkness to Earth. Sending many Oni to find and kill the child who'll grow up to be Shuten Doji, he doesn't care who gets in their way, nor if they're killed. After Kitani dies, Yonen plans a battle between his followers and Jiro Shutendo, kidnapping his parents and girlfriend Miyuki to persuade him to show up, with the battle itself claiming the lives of many, including Jiro's friends. Once Jiro survives the battle, Yonen congratulates him by dropping his dad from high above, threatening to kill Kyoko and Miyuki if Jiro doesn't offer himself to Jarai. With the arrival of Senki ruining his plans, Yonen threatens to kill Miyuki before attempting to kill Kyoko with his final breath.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: As with other works by Go Nagai, the series had some following in Italy.
  • Narm: In the manga, when insisting to Goki to take her with them, Miyuki doesn't realize she is naked the entire time when reuniting with Shutendo, excusing herself by saying that "she forgot about that during all the commotion". It almost makes it Black Comedy given the sexual abuse she previously suffered.
  • The Woobie: Both Jiro and Miyuki count, the former because he has to get involved with monstrous creatures to discover his origin and the latter because said creatures spend most of their time harassing her.
