YMMV / SHOP: A Pop Opera

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: On top of the normal aesops, the ending gag carries the lesson of "It doesn't hurt to ask, so long as you can gracefully accept the answer not being what you wanted." The protagonist decides to try the strawberry yogurt sample, and after tasting it asks if he can try the raspberry one. The employee says no (it's only one sample per customer), but the protagonist is cool with this answer.
  • Awesome Music: It's Jack Stauber so you know it's gonna have plenty of bangers. According to the replay frequency on Youtube, the most popular song is "Coffee", followed by "Cheese".
  • Fan Nickname: Some viewers call the protagonist "Jeff", after the Old Lady's failing hearing causes her to mishear "I'm not deaf" as "I'm Jeff".
  • Funny Moments:
    • The Running Gag of the other shoppers asking if the main shopper is deaf.
    • The Main Shopper asking the Bread Man if his dog was artisanally bred.
    • Arlene (the Coffee Lady) falling asleep mid-sentence due to caffeine withdrawal. When the Main Shopper puts some coffee in her mouth she almost immediately wakes back up and continues talking without skipping a beat.
    • The Cheese song is a hurricane of cheese puns while the shopper goes through the Five Stages of Grief.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The sound that plays when the main shopper gets an item on his list.
  • Signature Song: “Coffee” has arguably become the most popular song from the series.
  • Squick: The cheese the Main Shopper picks up in the final episode. Even he thinks he could’ve chosen something better.
The Main Shopper: Dairy free maple coconut water cheese? I could have picked something better than that.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: A downplayed example. SHOP is a lot tamer then some of Jack Stauber's work, but it still has some themes and imagery that might go over some kid's heads, along with some nightmarish imagery in "Oatmeal" and a use of "hell" in "Coffee". Despite this, it's rated TV-PG and has aired on Cartoon Network every once in a while before switching over to [adult swim].
