  • Complete Monster: The villain of this Bollywood classic is the sadistic Dacoit (bandit) leader Gabbar Singh, who, while looting and terrorizing the village of Ramgarh, kills people not only because he wants to be feared, but also just for fun. After Thakur Baldev Singh arrested Gabbar when the Thakur was still a police officer, Gabbar escaped from prison and slaughtered the Thakur's whole family before chopping off both of Thakur’s arms to spite him. He gleefully shoots three of his own loyal men for target practice for their failure to extort the village of Ramgarh, and later orders an Imam's child killed as a warning to massacre the whole town unless they give up two mercenaries (Veeru and Jai) who were hired by the Thakur to protect the villagers. When the villagers refused and instead have Jai and Veeru to shoot down four of Gabber's men in revenge for the child's murder, Gabbar angrily vowed to have both Thakur and the two mercenaries killed along with the rest of citizens of Ramgarh. When his men finally capture Veeru and his love interest Basanti, Gabbar forces Basanti to dance for him and his gang non-stop or he'll blow Veeru's head off, forcing Jai to sacrifice himself in order to allow Veeru to escape with Basanti.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Gabbar Singh gleefully crosses this when he slaughters the Thakur's whole family, including his grandson after breaking out of prison. Not only that, he chops off the Thakur's arms, leaving him permanently crippled.
  • Love to Hate/Unpopular Popular Character: Apparently, Gabbar Singh was quite popular with viewers, despite being the Trope Codifier for the Complete Monster in Indian cinema.
  • Vindicated by History: The film did not do well when it was first released, but then word of mouth spread and it had a full house for FIVE YEARS. Now, it is regarded as a classic.
