YMMV / Shivers (1975)

Go To

  • Fridge Logic: What exactly were the father and daughter doing before St. Luc entered the room? The film makes it seem as though they were just silently sitting perfectly still in the dark before St. Luc came in, and only then did they start acting out. If so, why? One possible explanation is that they were just infected.
  • Funny Moments: The fact the film just Crosses the Line Twice with the sex plague makes certain scenes hilarious. One notable instance is when a couple go to the building's manager to complain about the constant noise and racket in the building. The manager nods and takes them to his office to sort the whole thing out — when they enter, there's an orgy going on in his office, and there's a comedy beat for reaction, before which the couple are dragged into the orgy themselves.
  • Older Than They Think: The film's parasites are similar enough to these of Alien that Cronenberg still believes Alien scriptwriter Dan O'Bannon got inspired from this film (and he was not alone, as apparently a spectator once berated Cronenberg in a festival for supposedly plagiarizing Alien, only to apologize and criticize Alien instead when David told him Shivers came earlier). O'Bannon later denied watching the film, while John Landis claimed O'Bannon did watch it and in fact talked about it all the time before writing Alien.
  • Values Dissonance: As a result of the sex parasites, men start making out with other men and women start making out with other women. It's ambiguous, but viewers can interpret this as people losing all rational inhibitions. Nowadays, putting homosexuality on the same level as incest or pedophilia would be offensive to Western audiences. On the other hand, that's entirely the point since Roger is depicted as a brutish Designated Hero.
