YMMV / Shinya Hashimoto

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Not the extent of hate, as Hashimoto still has his fair share of fans in United States, but he never was nearly as famous there as Keiji Mutoh, Masahiro Chono, Mitsuharu Misawa and other traditional Japanese stars were. Unlike most of them, Hashimoto never had any significant tenure in any major US promotion, his premature death ended his career early, and his charisma didn't translate well to American audiences due to how painfully Japanese he was (to note: a borderline tarento-like appearance, a wrestling style based mostly around martial arts, and an overuse of drama in his matches), meaning he only managed to be really talked about among hardcore puroresu fans and those who favored guys Hashimoto wrestled against. Even today, after Japanese wrestling became much more known, in the west he remains the least popular of the Three Musketeers by a wide margin.
  • Badass Decay:
    • Failing at beating decisively Ogawa derailed Hashimoto's momentum in NJPW, to the point he had to create an entire new promotion where he could book himself to rebuild his aura.
    • For some people, Hashimoto and Ogawa's newfound friendship meant their enmity could never be solved, which would always leave a sour note on the former fans.
  • Fan Nickname: "Fat Japanese Elvis".
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Hashimoto died from a brain aneurysm after years finishing opponents with a brainbuster.
  • Hype Backlash: Famous or not, Hashimoto is so praised every time he's mentioned that people unfamiliar with puroresu culture often have a hard time understanding why an angry fat dude who seems to do solely kicks to the chest and DDTs could be so good a wrestler.
  • Moment of Awesome: Main eventing day one of the joint WCW New Japan Collision In Korea cross promotional peace festival event with Scott Norton. 150,000 made it the second most attended pro wrestling show of all time, surpassed only by day two when Ric Flair and Antonio Inoki main evented.
  • Narm Charm: Thinking objectively, the premise of an overweight martial artist with death stares who beats people down like a boss only can sound like some sort of low/mid-card comedy gimmick, but that's precisely what made Hashimoto so awesome.
