YMMV / Shinbone Alley

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Archy quickly comes to terms with the fact that he committed suicide and came back as a cockroach.
  • Animation Age Ghetto: It's really not a kids' film (and it's rated PG in America), but since it's an Animated Musical with Talking Animals, people tend to mistake it for one.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Mehitabel is about the only thing most people remember about this movie.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: After getting fed up with Mehitabel for falling back into Big Bill's arms, Archie decides to declare war on humanity... for some reason. This leads to a sequence, animated in the art style of Krazy Kat, where he rallies the neighborhood insects for a revolution. And then he's told that Mehitabel had kittens, and immediately drops his plan so he can go see how she's doing.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Archy gets so despondent at one point that he tries to commit suicide (again!) by laying in pool table pockets, only for the players to be too inept to squash him that way.
  • Fair for Its Day: The story ends with Archy realizing he shouldn't try to change Mehitabel, and her return to the alley is portrayed as a good thing. Considering that the story hits most of the beats of a typical "Nice Guy wears down a girl who isn't into him" plot, it's fairly forward-thinking for Archy to let Mehitabel be herself and for this to be seen as a positive. The snag that makes it fall into this trope is that Mehitabel pursues a self-destructing lifestyle that also hurts those around her, something the movie itself does not sugarcoat. This takes a lot of the progressivism out of Archy’s decision and makes the ending far more bitter.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Mehitabel isn't a nice cat but the hard life she's had to lead makes it obvious why she is the way she is.
  • Quirky Work: The movie starts with the protagonist getting reincarnated as a cockroach. It gets weirder from there.
  • Ugly Cute: Archy, the cartoon cockroach.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: A cartoon about a talking bug and cat? Of course it must be totally kid friendly!
  • The Woobie: Archy. Hell, the film starts with him committing suicide!
    • Mehitabel's kittens. Neither of their parents planned for or wanted them and it shows. Big Bill leaves as soon as they're born and Mehitabel leaves them to die after she decides the sacrifices she needed to make to care for them were too much.
