YMMV / She Kills Monsters

Go To

  • No Yay: Agnes and Chuck are mistaken as having romantic relations by other characters. In the original version, Agnes is a 25-year-old teacher while Chuck is a high school student, making it especially squicky. Downplayed in productions where they are both teenagers.
  • Realism-Induced Horror:
    • The entire bullying scene, especially in the original edition which uses homophobic slurs and borders on sexual harassment.
    • Agnes having to fight a violent Evil Doppelgänger of her boyfriend, while initially played for laughs, can turn into this depending on how the fight is staged. Imagine being a woman having something that looks like the man you love try to kill you, and then imagine having to kill it in turn.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?:
    • While the premise of a play about a game of Dungeons & Dragons might seem appealing to kids through the title alone, the original version is filled with profanity (One character calls another a "fucking fucktard" twice), fighting, and at some points, pot smoking (played for laughs) and sexual themes. The protagonist uses the help of a male gamer to be able to understand the game, and her boyfriend jumps to conclusions and thinks they're having sex. In another scene, the sister is pressured into kissing one of the play's female villains, then is bullied (complete with homophobic slurs) when she attempts to do so. Also, the woman's sister and parents die in a car crash at the beginning of the show, setting up the plot.
    • Downplayed by the "Young Adventurers Edition" and "Virtual Realms" edition, which edit out the profanity, sexual references, and the death of the parents, but still deal with heavy themes of grief and bullying better suited to teens and up.
