This is a reference to the historical Khazars, a civilization of steppe nomads noted for being the only society in history to have ever converted to Judaism en masse.
• Political Overcorrectness: While Second Edition was criticized for featuring many prominent women and LGBT characters by fans of First Edition, Khitai has been hit with accusations of subtle or overt racism and cultural appropriation by the fans of Second Edition, particularly with the removal of the "Sailing" skill and the addition of the "Mysticism" skill. When people began dogpiling on the dev team, saying they minimized, ignored, or outright erased the maritime achievements of the adapted cultures, JW himself stepped in on the Kickstarter to, first, point out that over half of the dev team is of Asian descent, second, the anthropologists and historians they are partnering with will be of Asian descent and experts in their fields, and third, all of the other skills in the game could be used for individual tasks aboard a boat rather than reducing all the complex tasks of sailing a ship to one bland skill.
