YMMV / Senryu Girl

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • Nanako's actions and writings suggest this. She also has a rather weird sense of humor herself.
    • Kino has a very weird sense of humor and is not above making fun of her friends in unexpected ways.
    • Tao has her moments, and hates it. Since she tries to give off an image of a cool, stoic fortuneteller. Especially when she was trying to come off as mysterious on live TV, only for that image to be ruined by Nanako and Eiji's antics.
    • Komachi's attempts to be a delinquent is kinda out there, as well as getting Eiji's attention.
  • Arc Fatigue: After nearly over 100+ chapters and counting, you'd think Nanako could have at least properly confess to Eiji or the other way around, but the manga continues with the cast's usual shenanigans, and a drunk confession that really doesn't go anywhere. Which is unfortunate due to how similar Arc Fatigues had shown in romance manga such as Nisekoi, We Never Learn, and even Komi Can't Communicate. But it doesn't stop fans from reading it due to its Slice of Life nature. Things seems to picking up in chapter 141 when Nanako plans to confess to Eiji and culminates in Chapters 151 and 152, when Eiji and Nanako confess to each other.
  • Awesome Art: There are some solo panels where the art is beautifully well-drawn. Such as chapter 80 where Nanako asks Eiji what he thinks of her beauty pageant dress.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Komachi, though it's less of her being a wrench in the relationship between Eiji and Nanako and more of her being thrown into a (in the eyes of readers) one-sided Love Triangle. Chapter 149 proved that it really is one-sided when she tried to confess to Eiji when he in fact prefers someone to be themselves.
    • Akari, who is the antagonist for Chapters 101-104 falls under this due to various reasons. The revelation that she was the reason why Nanako is bullied up until high school and giving her an Armor-Piercing Question about her own feelings towards Eiji rubbed people the wrong way, since it was Nanako herself who told Eiji that she doesn't care about what others think about them briefly made her Out of Character. Luckily, the fans won't have to see her ever again.
    • Iori Fujimaru hits hard with this as a new girl who also has a crush on Eiji. While people love her design and personality, fans immediately dread of her being an Unlucky Childhood Friend due to how the series centers on Eiji's relationship with Nanako. Like Komachi above, this will lead to a one-sided love triangle. Unfortunately, this ends up happening when her friend Sakura notices that she's in love with Eiji.
  • Catharsis Factor: Readers outright cheered when Akari's boyfriend ditches her when trying to intimidate Eiji, only to realize that it was Eiji himself who looks as if he's giving off a Death Glare (he was actually squinting). A lightless Christmas indeed.
  • Cliché Storm: Your usual Rom Com is thusly: Girl meets a guy, guy is oblivious to the girl's feelings, the two spend time together, their friends can see it, the girl clearly loves the guy, but is scared to act on them. However, this series has random humor that works well in its setting.
  • Die for Our Ship: This became inevitable as far as readers are concerned. Nanako/Eiji shippers really doesn't like Komachi for getting in the way of Nanako and Eiji's relationship (in fact, she doesn't do anything to even hinder their relationship due to the fact that Eiji spends way more time with Nanako than he does with Komachi). Amane even notices and enforces it in-universe to give Nanako a makeover so that she can be on a date with Eiji. This is also worth pointing out that the Love Triangle is incredibly one-sided, since Eiji chooses Nanako.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Both Kino and Tao are the two most popular characters in the show after their debut appearance. The former being a Shrinking Violet who has amazing art skills and the latter being a twin-tailed goth girl being a fortune teller with accurate predictions.
  • Friendly Fandoms: The fans of this series are on friendly terms with the fans of Hitoribocchi no OO Seikatsu for their Moe Shrinking Violet protagonists and both shows being released on 2019 Spring anime season. It helps that fans of this show and Hitoribocchi watch each other's favorite show. Another being Komi Can't Communicate with its own Shrinking Violet where she communicates through writing. Fans of all three manga will often they must be protected at all costs.
  • I Knew It!: While it was a Foregone Conclusion that Eiji and Nanako were going to be a couple, fans immediately knew how one-sided the Love Triangle between Nanako, Eiji, and Komachi is. They were proven very correct when Eiji unintentionally makes a point that being someone they are not won't give a Relationship Upgrade. They must be themself.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: Subverted. Despite its running time clocking at 13 minutes, the fans appreciate the effort he animation crew have gone to make the anime.
  • Les Yay: Kino and Tao after it's revealed they're best friends in the same class. Especially in 128 where Tao shares her water bottle with Kino and Tao, in a bout of Insane Troll Logic, thinks her first kiss is being stolen. Cue her yelling "That's not fair! Please give me your first kiss, Knotty!".
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • With 2019 showing Shrinking Violet protagonists gaining prominence, Nanako and Kino are being paired with Bocchi as the girls fans MUST PROTECC.

  • Moe: Nearly every girl is cute in their own right, with a huge exception with Akari.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Fans really ate up Delinquent Nanako as the funniest part of episode 6/chapter 58. Even moreso when her father depicts her staying in her Character Tic by speaking in senryu.
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: There are shippers who support EijiXNanako, but EijiXKomachi are aware of the one-sidedness of the shipping. Considering both girls have their reasons to be with Eiji, Nanako fans actually feel bad for Komachi because the series centering on Nanako and Eiji's relationship.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Fans have this sentiment towards Akari, the girl who bullied Nanako for her Character Tic. After chapter 104, she disappears for the rest of the year, and hasn't shown up since.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Nanako and Akari's plot is resolved in just a chapter after her introduction. While people find it satisfying to see her boyfriend ditch her upon being intimidated by Eiji, fans think the storyline could have been resolved better, and give Nanako the closure she needed.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Many readers were actually confused by Akari's gender due to her boyish short haircut. What helps tips them off about her actual gender is her skirt.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Little Girls?: You would think by the way this series was made, you'd expect this to be a Shōjo series, right? Nope. It's a Shōnen series as it was published in Weekly Shonen Magazine, a shonen magazine that originally published Devilman in 1972. Just like its contemporaries, this manga mainly focuses on the romance side of the manga.
  • Woolseyism: You have to hand it to the fan translators for maintaining the syllable count when translating Nanako's many poems. There was some backlash when the anime subtitles didn't do the same.
