YMMV / Seminar

  • Funny Moments: The laughs come frequently, and are often rapid-fire.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A professional sleeping with women who come to him seeking career advancement (especially since ha slo admits to past relationships with students when he was a college professor), hits differently in the 2020s than it did in 2011.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: In the play's New York run, much of the interest with theatergoers came from Alan Rickman playing the part of Leonard. Once Rickman announced he was stepping down from the role after six months ticket sales plummeted and the play left Broadway soon afterward.
  • Moment of Awesome: Leonard's huge monologue at the last seminar.
  • Playing Against Type: Alan Rickman as the snarky, acid-tongued, deeply jaded and world-weary Leonard is not a case of this, but when it was announced that Rickman was leaving the production and Jeff Goldblum would be taking over the part, many people were left scratching their heads, as it was hard to image a more against type character for Goldblum to play.
  • Tear Jerker: Kate slowly breaking into tears that she tries to hide when she finds Martin and Izzy about to hook up, and when she later does the same once again when she tries to say that she's happy for them.
    • Leonard's admission that he is just as sensitive as Martin, and can't have his works published any more because of it.
    • Not quite a tearjerker, but Douglas' hurt and bewildered reaction to Leonard characterizing him as a literary whore makes you feel some sympathy for him.
