YMMV / Segata Sanshiro

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • The Segata Sanshiro theme is so awesome its CD sold over 100,000 copies.
    • This fan remix is also stellar.
  • Crazy Is Cool: You best rev up them Saturns, lest Sanshiro-san hunt you down and judo-flip you.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Him beating up innocent people for simply not playing the Sega Saturn is so ridiculous that it's just hysterical to look at.
  • Designated Hero: He's sometimes described in-universe as being a great hero even though all he does is beat innocent people within in an inch of their lives just because they aren't playing Sega Saturn.
    • In an AlternateHistory.com thread called Player Two Start, Sega addressed this when they brought Segata to the US; instead of beating people up for not playing the Saturn, he'd instead assault the people who want you to stop playing the Saturn, such as teachers and Nintendo salesmen.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Even though his commercials were exclusive to Japan, overseas gamers, especially in North America, consider his advertising campaign to be comedy gold, with some believing that had he been used to advertise the Sega Saturn in the west, the console might not have been a commercial flop.
  • Heartwarming Moments: For the commercials for Sakura Wars 2, Segata Sanshiro takes a break from being a badass to frolick beneath the cherry blossoms with Sakura Shinguji.
    • Which the game itself references, a screenshot showing Sakura and Segata standing in a field of cherry blossoms, and she's happily laughing with Segata smiling, just like the commercial. And of course, they do still frolick together when they're paired up.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Sakura has appeared in the first Project × Zone, and in the sequel... Segata got in.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Segata Sanshiro himself is a martial artist determined to promote the Sega Saturn at all costs. To this end, Segata will beat up anyone he finds not playing a Sega Saturn and leave one behind. Later on, he will forego these methods and promote the Sega Saturn through other means, such as disguising himself as Santa Claus to scare kids into playing, battling a martial artist with a judo throw that makes the martial artist explode twice, or playing sports using his superhuman feats. When a missile is launched against the Sega headquarters, Segata throws himself at it and redirects it into space, exploding with it and seemingly sacrificing his life. Years later, he is revealed to have faked his death in order to test his son Sega Shiro as a worthy successor of his legacy, disguising himself as the evil Hatan Shiro and battling him in a duel. After being defeated and his facade being dropped, Segata declares Sega Shiro the new defender of Sega and orders his son to throw him to Saturn where Segata explodes. While this is revealed to have been a dream by Sega Shiro, he would still find a black belt that reads "I leave Sega in your hands".
  • Memetic Badass: Practically everyone who's heard of him (or Hiroshi Fujioka for that matter) is convinced that he can take on Chuck Norris.
