  • Awesome Music: Aside from being a product of its time, the one other thing most people can agree about regarding this cartoon is that the music is extremely catchy, with a swinging jazzy tune.
  • Bile Fascination: Many have shown interest in checking out the cartoon to see just how racist it is.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The blatant racism gets to a point where the cartoon is entertaining to watch just because of it.
  • Fair for Its Day: The singing black woman who leads the short is depicted as attractive and sexualized, something uncommon in the day, albeit she does have much lighter skin than the townsfolk. Considering she's modelled after Lena Horne, who was very light skinned, this isn't surprising.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The cartoon is better known for being one of the most racist things to come out of The Golden Age of Animation (to the point that it was considered offensive even back then) than anything that actually happens in it.
  • Signature Scene: The shot of one man happily munching on watermelon is probably the one part of this cartoon that seemingly everyone knows.
  • Unfortunate Character Design: At one point there is a brief glimpse of a woman washing clothes who has some unusually thick clothespins in her mouth. So thick, in fact, that to modern viewers it looks like she's eating condoms!
  • Values Dissonance: Was seen as incredibly racist even by the standards of the time, to the extent that it was pulled from circulation in 1949, the first such example in the history of cartoons, preceding the Censored Eleven by 19 years. It has never been aired on television.
