- Adorkable: Barry's the youngest and easily most innocent human character on the show, and his carefree awe towards the wildlife of Vesta as well as his passion for electronics are very endearing.
- Awesome Art: The series is fantastically animated, with an emphasis on naturalistic movement, lush colors, and wild creature design that make it feel like watching a nature documentary set in a MÅ“bius illustration.
- Diagnosed by the Audience: Barry is generally assumed to be autistic by the fanbase. This is heavily implied but not explicitly stated in the show itself.
- The same goes for viewers' suspicions of Ursula's Asperger's syndrome.
- Friendly Fandoms:
- Its dialogue-light storytelling, lush animation, emphasis on the careless violence of the natural world, and the fact that they're both well-received, adult-oriented Western animated shows airing on MAX has led to a natural crossover appeal with Primal (2019).
- Its combination of Scenery Porn with surreal alien Body Horror, along with its sedate pacing and ecological themes, have also earned it a following from fans of The Southern Reach Trilogy and its film adaptation Annihilation (2018). Hell, Jeff Vandermeer himself is a fan.
- Iron Woobie: Levi... and this is natural for a small robot in a tough environment.
- Ugly Cute:
- The Hollow starts as this. In the first episode it's about the size of a koala bear and has a head resembling a baby grey alien and a body resembling a tree frog, lending it an oddly cuddly appearance despite how sinister it is. As it keeps feeding and growing it loses the cute factor and becomes more straightforwardly intimidating.
- The weird little furry creature in episode 11 is a much more straightforward example. It looks like a cross between a Furby and a miniature Sasquatch and has an oblivious demeanor that brings to mind possums or raccoons. It also spooks very easily.
