YMMV / Saw II

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Mudvayne's "Forget to Remember" in the end credits is so awesome, it has its own Saw-style music video.
  • Contested Sequel: Even when it was released, there were debates about whether it was necessary to have a second Saw film; detractors criticized more Gorn and implausibility. But there were plenty of people who found the film to be an improvement - allowing Tobin Bell to properly shine as a villain, strong performances from Donnie Wahlberg and others, an expanded role for Amanda and some more interesting twists.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Needle Pit scene becomes this once the twists in both this movie and the next one come in. Since Amanda is even more evil than Jigsaw, Xavier's Kick the Dog moment is retroactively Laser-Guided Karma, as it gives Amanda a good dose of karma before she commits even more atrocities.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Oh yes, there will be blood... when I drink your milkshake!
    • Emmanuelle Vaugier (Addison's actress) had starred in a Charmed (1998) episode not too long before, where Tobin Bell played the Monster of the Week tormenting her.
    • Erik Knudsen would later star in Scream 4, the first scene of which mocks the Saw franchise.
    • It has been pointed out that one of the jump-cuts in the opening trap's scene uses the same stock sound that Five Nights at Freddy's 2 uses for its jumpscares. This would be hilarious enough on its own, if the trap in question also didn't have the victim die by having his head crushed with a helmet filled with spikes, similar to how the FNaF franchise's villain would later die in the third game.
  • Love to Hate: Besides Jigsaw himself, Xavier gets this from some due to Franky G's enjoyably boisterous and hammy performance, as well as becoming a genuinely menacing threat over the course of the film.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Xavier throwing Amanda into the pit of needles and forcing her to solve his test for him. If that doesn't count, then killing Jonas and leaving Addison to a Cruel and Unusual Death qualifies.
  • Nausea Fuel: Amanda being thrown into the Needle Pit (a pit of dirty syringes).
  • Retroactive Recognition: Aiden Pierce's voice actor is the one in the opening Death Mask trap.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • In a minor example, during Xavier's chase on Amanda and Daniel, the three end up running into the Bathroom from the first film, with Adam and Zep's corpses and Lawrence's severed foot present and clearly in the early stages of decay. The Bathroom was only a part of the building where this film's main game takes place in.
    • Saw II manages to do just as well as the first film (if not more) in leaving the viewer shocked at the end.
      • For starters, the moment when Eric, the SWAT team and Amanda and Daniel are going to meet is Cut Apart with the reveal that all of them were at different places or times.
      • Then, when Kerry realizes what was going on, she looks at the safe, which opens with a clearly broken Daniel inside it.
      • The biggest kicker is arguably the moment it's revealed that Amanda was the one who subdued Eric and left him in the Bathroom.
  • Spoiled by the Format: Jigsaw gets identified and apprehended by the police fairly early on in the second movie of a series that currently has ten films. At such a point, it becomes less a question of "if" he'll turn it around on them and more "how" and "when" he'll do so.
