Let's list a few opinions from the song... What a Senseless Waste of Human Life World War I was, and how many Wide Eyed Idealists rushed to an early grave through horrible means, for reasons they didn't fully understand. Nobody remembers their names, or their lives, so nobody cares that they're gone, and all we can do is wonder and hope the world's learned from it. The lyrics continue, deconstructing True Companions and Patriotic Fervor by listing them as nothing special beyond another way to get sucked into the slaughter. The Bloodier and Gorier official lyric video both heightens this, with vivid imagery like Snow Means Death all throughout and silhouetted soldiers crying what are strongly suggested by the other images to be Tears of Blood, and makes it double as Nightmare Fuel. One line in particular stands out above all the rest:
  Sag mir, Soldat, wann deine Hoffnung schwand (Tell me, soldier, when your hope began to die.^note more literally translated, 'when your hope waned')
