- Award Snub: Trevor Howard received some of his best notices for portraying Father Collins; many (including co-star Sarah Miles) felt he, rather than John Mills, should have won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
- One-Scene Wonder: Barry Foster as Tim O'Leary, the revolutionary leader. Though his scenes are on the lengthy side, his impact on the film far outweighs his actual screen time.
- Questionable Casting: David Lean made a grave miscalculation in casting Christopher Jones, who many felt undermined the film.
- Tough Act to Follow: This had the misfortune to come right after Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, two of David Lean's biggest hits. It was savaged by critics at the time.
- Vindicated by History: When originally released, it was torn to shreds by critics. Over time, however, people have acknowledged that, while not quite a masterpiece, it's still a good film in its own right.
