YMMV / Romancing Walker

Go To

  • Adorkable: Mariel is a female version. She's socially awkward, and churns out a faux pas every minute, but it's hard not to like her, or at least be amused by her antics.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is Mariel just a lovable, ditzy gadgeteer, or is she a type A Stepford Smiler, if we trust the author's afterthoughts?
  • Base-Breaking Character: Fina Delstar. Some think she is badass (especially as a Sacred Dragoon), funny and like her role of reluctant heroine who struggles to live up to her Heroic Lineage. Others view her as an annoying Spotlight Stealing Character who is often shilled by the entire cast.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: After arriving in the town of Meldia, Ryle has trouble sleeping. He takes a walk outside, only to find himself trying to rescue a girl in a bunny outfit, and having a discussion with a gigantic talking slime named "Hard Boiled Jell O Papa" who just wanted an autograph from the girl in question.
  • Cliché Storm: Full to brimming with every fantasy, anime, and visual novel cliche... and yet it was pretty popular over at the Something Awful Forums.
  • Creator's Pet: Fina. She's the daughter of the prequel's protagonist, Flare Delstar (named after the creator), is the most powerful, has the most choices and is Ryle's canon love interest.
  • Die for Our Ship: Being the canon love interest, Fina gets this from players who ship Ryle with any other girl.
  • Moe: Mariel, most obviously, and Orubia as well.
  • Narm: It's meant to be dramatic, but when Ryle tries telling off Xaktor, it comes out this way: You are nothing but a 3rd rated politician! Only someone with no virtue could do the things you do like: brainwashing, authorotarian rule.. The third Demon Lord's self-introduction is also pretty narmy: I am Death Master! And I will destroy your party 1 by 1!
  • Narm Charm: One could easily argue that Romancing Walker runs on this. For all its overblown dramatic moments, RPG cliches, and variable gameplay quality, it has a charm of its own that allows the player to overlook, or even transcend, these flaws.
  • That One Boss: Demon Lord Nofam, the second of the four Demon Lords that must be defeated before facing CHAOS. Not only does she have two vicious hydra sidekicks, she has an uncanny knack of paralyzing the entire party and waxing their health before they can do much about it. She's also quite resistant to most attacks. The most reliable strategy is to use a team of Ryle, Fina, Mariel and Orubia: Ryle's "Tohdanken" can decimate the Hydras, Mariel's laser can penetrate Nofam's shield, and Orubia can heal everyone if things get hairy.
