YMMV / Rock Dog

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Justified, as the original graphic novel was only released in China and only resembles the movie it inspired in Broad Strokes, not to mention is significantly more violent and moody. The movie takes the part about a Mastiff from Tibet who plays rock music and is being pursued by wolves, and that's about it.
  • Adorkable: Bodi. Though he sometimes borders on Idiot Hero due to his naïveté, he's just so lovable that you can't help but want to hug him.
  • Awesome Art: The introductory backstory done in 2D, to the point that many viewers wished the whole film looked like that.
  • Awesome Music:
    • "Glorious".
    • The instrumental version, "Bodi Finds the Fire," which Bodi plays when he finds his fire.
    • The absolutely perfect use of "Learn To Fly" by Foo Fighters during the montage of Bodi traveling to the city.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • A routine tour bus passes by Angus' place, with the driver providing this delightful commentary.
"And to your right, is the home of rock legend Angus Scattergood. Each year, thousands of wannabe musicians flock these gates in the hope of meeting him, only to have their dreams crushed." [Bodi walks towards the mansion.] "Oh look, here comes one now!"
    • Linnux's Establishing Character Moment has him giving advice on kneecapping someone... to his mother.
  • Crossover Ship: There's a fairly popular one between Bodi and K.K. Slider for the simple reason that they both happen to be canine characters who play the guitar.
  • Cult Classic: Has managed to gain a small but dedicated fandom, which might explain why two sequels were developed years later.
  • Ho Yay:
    • There's some between Bodi and Angus, especially from the former who seems to take any chance he could to hug Angus, to say nothing of his somewhat obsessive behavior in the beginning (like singing within the proximity of his mansion where he could be heard) which might be the result of a Celeb Crush. Meanwhile from Angus's side, he genuinely felt guilty for not properly crediting Bodi for their song and later admits to his friends, Darma and Germur, that Bodi's a bit of a muse of his.
      • Perhaps a more obvious example is that the song Bodi and Angus ended up writing together is basically a love song. The chorus even has the line about growing old together which they both sing in a duet during the concert performance. Though this could just be chalked up to Angus suggesting that the subject should appeal to the masses (love songs sell after all) since its original subject was about being stuck in a garbage truck, still fans took this as a sign that there's something more between the two.
    • There is also a couple of interactions between Riff and Skozz that take hints of their relationship like a married couple
  • Jerkass Woobie: Angus Scattergood. True, he's a stuck up rock star who takes credit for Bodi's song but we're introduced to him in a serious (and hilariously realistic) bout of Writer's Block while being hounded by his pushy boss. And most of his time spent around Bodi results in him getting hurt.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: It should come as a surprise to no one that many furries only saw this movie for the cute animals and not much else.
  • Moe: Bodi. His cute character design and optimistic, innocent Adorkable personality make him quite the Precious Puppy.
    • The one time Angus reveals his eyes earns him some cuteness points, especially when they change to a determined expression.
  • Popular with Furries: See Just Here for Godzilla above.
  • Shipping:
    • Bodi/Angus. As the only characters who have a large amount of interaction with each other, Bodi's relentless pursuit of Angus, Angus himself growing fond of Bodi as the story goes on, and the appeal of two opposing species being in-love, it was a no-brainer for certain viewers. And that's not even getting into their song, "Glorious", which barely veers into Silly Love Songs territory.
    • Bodi/Dharma, an equally popular ship with many pointing to the scene where Dharma calls Bodi "cute." That, and she's the only prominent female character in the whole movie.
    • Riff/Skozz, for being Those Two Guys of Linnux's wolf pack.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The general consensus of the film: mostly predictable but an otherwise harmless bit of fluff.
  • Special Effect Failure: During the two scenes where it rains, the fur as well as the fabric on the characters' clothes look completely the same, giving no illusion that they were ever wet.
  • Squick: Bodi eating pizza out of a dumpster. Angus's reaction is completely justified.
Angus: [I'm] never gonna eat pizza again...
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Although the film was completed before Zootopia and Sing, it was released after both films came out, and thus received a lot of criticism for having similarities with them. The fact that it also seems to be taking a lot of cues from Kung Fu Panda (Chinese setting, underdog story, 2D animated intro) earned it a lot of criticisms for fans of those films.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Those gorgeous particle effects when Bodi defeats the wolf pack with The Power of Rock.
