YMMV / Robin Hood S 03 E 02 Cause And Effect

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Two episodes after Marian's horrific murder, Robin is back to his cheerful old self. Sure, there's been a considerably longer passage of time for him In-Universe, but to the audience it's still an extremely jarring case of Mood Whiplash.
  • Ass Pull: We've never seen canopies on the parapets of Nottingham Castle before, but one appears just when Robin needs it to hang-glide down to safety.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Robin essentially invents hang-gliding, straining the limits of credibility even for this show, only for it to never get mentioned again — either in this episode or any other.
  • Damsel Scrappy: Straight out of the gate, Kate grabs hold of the Distress Ball and sprints off with it as fast as her legs can carry her. After needlessly giving away the hiding place of her brother and nearly getting flogged by Gisborne's men as punishment for defying him, she botches the outlaws' subsequent rescue attempt by prematurely rushing into battle without either a weapon or a plan. This only results in the capture of both Matthew and Robin, and as the remaining outlaws convene to figure out what to do next, she abandons them in order to sneak into the castle by herself, where she's promptly seen and captured by Gisborne. After offering up Robin's location in exchange for her brother's safety in a deal that Guy clearly has no intention of honoring, her presence when she's dragged out into the courtyard is what halts the ongoing attempt by Robin and the conscripts to fight their way out of the castle. Seeing Guy holding his sister hostage, Matthew grabs a sword and is effortlessly killed when he tries to rescue her, and Kate is unceremoniously thrown out the front gates, having actively made everything worse for everyone. Just to tick off every prerequisite to this trope, they even have her state: "I can look after myself" early on when Much offers her his assistance. And this is just her first episode.
  • Fridge Logic: The Sheriff's plan to sell every village man in the shire to Prince John's enemies, whilst indicative of how desperate the Sheriff is to meet the Prince's patronage tax and how difficult raising the money is, doesn't really make sense as a long-term plan. Gisborne even points it out to him but Vaisey retorts that when Prince John gets his money, he won't question where it came from.
Vaisey: I want those two buffoons out of Nottingham before Prince John finds out they were here!
Vaisey: Why should he find out?! Prince John will get his patronage money, he has to, and where it comes from is of no importance!
  • Narm: The sight of Robin and Finn hang-gliding from the castle parapets.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Much's immediate infatuation with Kate is inexplicable. She speaks to him rudely throughout, constantly botches up the outlaws' plans, and doesn't do anything to justify his awestruck reaction to her.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: It's hard to summon up much pity for either Matthew or Kate given their Too Dumb to Live behavior throughout this episode.
