• Critical Dissonance: Not well-liked by critics, both films did well at the box-office.
• Crosses the Line Twice: A clear attempt at this is when James daydreams of murdering Ben as soon as he's heard that he proposed to his sister.
• Harsher in Hindsight: The scene in the first film where a black man is being choked out, claiming that he can't breathe, is somewhat colored by the Eric Garner controversy a few months later. And then it became worse following the death of George Floyd in 2020.
• Special Effects Failure: Not in the film itself, but the poster on the main page. It looks like Ice Cube's head has been pasted on.
• Trailer Joke Decay: The shotgun gag with Ben flying back because of the recoil, since it's the most prominently featured gag in the ads.
• Tear Jerker: James being betrayed by his fellow officers, Miggs and Santiago, who reveal themselves as working for Omar. Initially, the three cops seemed to have a good working relationship but it’s later made clear that their betrayal stems from being repulsed by James’ arrogance and antisocial personality.
