YMMV / Rick And Morty S 6 E 3 Bethic Twinstinct

Go To

  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: In an inverse to the self-love apparently professed by the episode, there's also a lesson to be learnt in that affairs like the one Beth has with her space counterpart have consequences, which the family has to bear. Rick outright says this by warning her that the lies she says towards her family will pile up like credit card debt.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Is Beth actually attracted to women, therefore falling in love with her space counterpart? Or is it because her (and her clone's) egotistical nature caused them to fall in love with each other due to them being, genetically speaking, the same?
    • A truly strange case of this with Jerry, who, for much of this episode, is barely anything more than an oblivious Emasculated Cuckold. Perhaps this may be because of how the episode ends; Jerry takes advantage of the two Beths' conflicting egos, and this results in a threesome. So with that being said, did this happen because of pure dumb luck? Or was Jerry rigging the situation to end up like this, becoming a Magnificent Bastard in the process?
    • There is much speculation regarding the role of the Venusian wine in the events of this episode. Did it act as a Love Potion of sorts? Or is it just a normal bottle of wine?
      • And for that matter, Rick's role in this situation. Did he engineer this situation in a bid to ruin his Sitcom Archnemesis Jerry? Did he do it to "help" Beth? Or was it just wine that he left out by mistake, or even provided on purpose, not knowing the effect it would have (if it even did at all)?
      • Was it even his wine to begin with, or something Space Beth bought back from her travels?
    • Does Space Beth genuinely hate Jerry? Or is she jealous of Home Beth's love for him even after starting an affair with her? Or alternatively, is it possible Space Beth is in denial of having feelings for Jerry and acting out accordingly?
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: The Venusian wine has generated a ton of speculation regarding its nature and properties due to its purported symbolism. The wine itself is from "Venus" (with Venus also being the goddess of love and beauty), and "Venusian" is just French, the language of love. Many famous Sapphic movies are in French too. Many think that the wine is an aphrodisiac or has other special properties unrelated to alcoholic effects due to these reasons.
  • Fanfic Fuel: Rick apparently also "forgot the icecream". This has led many to once more be curious about Rick's life and his encounters with other Ricks.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Why does Space Beth treat Jerry the same way Beth did during season 2? Because the episode where Rick clones Beth takes place just before the one where she gets back together with Jerry. Space Beth only remembers the toxic relationship they had, and never got the proper development to move on from that.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Rick admitted in a deleted scene of The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy that he'd like to drink with Jerry sometime. In this episode they did it offscreen.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight
    • Summer and Rick play a more "realistic" version of Street Fighter, where they have to find each other before the actual fight can begin. Interestingly enough, Street Fighter 6 is set to have a "World Tour" Mode, featuring a customized character travel to various places and fight other characters.
    • With dialogue of an episode being done months to a year in advance, when Morty breaks down saying "Discovery Channel! Discovery Channel, why?" there's no way the writers would have known about the fiasco Discovery is currently going through with HBO Max, and animation. Some even speculate this was added in as a thinly veiled Take That! against the Discovery Channel (the fact that they were able to add a reference to the Coronavirus in "Never Ricking Morty" mere months after the pandemic began lends further credence to the theory).
  • Narm: Eagle-eyed (or rather, eagle-eared) viewers rather quickly noticed that Beth's moaning sounds are reused throughout the entire episode whenever both Beths make out, probably because it was simply too awkward to record the sounds for each new scene.
  • One True Threesome: While the show clearly pairs Earth Beth and Jerry together as an Official Couple, and her and Space Beth here, a sizable chunk of the fanbase that have been quiet and small beforehand wants to ship all three of them together, bolstered by the ending of the episode, which they see as them engaging in Three-Way Sex.
  • The Scrappy: Space Beth is hated by many in this episode in particular for being a massive Jerkass to Jerry and Rick and being particularly unrepentant in her role in Beth's unfaithfulness towards Jerry, to the point she outright wants Jerry kicked out of the house. In many ways, she resembled earlier versions of Rick in the worst ways in terms of sheer narcissism and being pitted against a now more beloved and badass Jerry, it was expected that she wouldn't be liked one bit.
