YMMV / Rick And Morty S 1 E 5 Meeseeks And Destroy

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Rick ushering Morty to safety and then shooting King Jellybean, who explodes into a chunky, gooey paste, is cathartic to watch after watching Jellybean almost force himself onto Morty in the bathroom earlier in the episode.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The Meeseeks quickly became one of the most popular character in the show thanks to their memorable catchphrases and goofy voices.
  • Fountain of Memes: Every single line that comes out of the Meeseeks' mouths. Not bad for a character who's only appeared in two episodes so far.
    • "I'M MISTER MEESEEKS! LOOK AT ME!!"
    • "CAN DO!"
    • "WHY DID YOU ROPE ME INTO THIS??" Repeat ad nauseum.
    • "EXISTENCE IS PAIN!"
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • This bit of dark humor from Rick:
Rick: (jokingly) You know, if somebody drops the soap, it's gonna land on our heads and crush our spines, Morty. You know, it'll be real easy to rape us after that.
    • Morty almost got raped by Mr. Jellybean later in the episode.
    • Morty's would-be rapist being the king of a kingdom (and two of his officials covering up his actions when they discover evidence of his molestations after his death to preserve his legacy) now comes off as prophetic in light of the sexual abuse allegations against major film mogul Harvey Weinstein, where he has been accused of harassing and raping women in Hollywood for decades, and the ensuing "Weinstein effect", which uncovered even more occurrences of sexual harassment and abuse by not only producers and directors, but also actors, athletes, politicians, doctors, and many, many, more.
    • And then this trope hit Morty and Rick themselves when female fans came out and confessed that their voice actor and co-creator Justin Roiland had a history of sending them disturbing and explicit messages when they were minors in January 2023.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Beth says this to Summer after she goes on a date with Mr. Meeseeks. It's safe to say she used this advice herself in a far later episode.
Beth: The greatest love you can receive is from yourself
  • Realism-Induced Horror: The Attempted Rape of Morty. Sentient jellybean or not, it's played so deadly straight that it's even scarier than if the rapist had been human. It is played realistically, and is often said by many to be the single most horrifying scene in the entire series, even compared to other scenes, full of Gorn and Eldritch Abominations.
