YMMV tropes about the works of Richard Scarry (Creators don't get YMMV tropes)

  • Broken Base: The original hardcover version of Pig Will and Pig Won't has Pig Won't getting spanked for disobeying one too many times. Due to changing attitudes about spanking as punishment, the spanking has been removed from current versions of the book. This has led to controversy from readers upset over the changes. Some have decried this as censorship, some who favor spanking argue that Pig Won't deserved it and some defended the early version on the grounds that Richard Scarry came from a different generation where spanking was considered a standard punishment.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One episode of The Busy World of Richard Scarry took detectives Sam and Dudley to Switzerland where they investigated the disappearance of affluent Mrs. Pig's expensive necklace at a costume party on a boat. This particular episode showed the detectives being aided by a female rabbit character dressed like a police officer and the culprits being a fox and a rat posing as a parent/caretaker and child respectively. Although the rabbit was merely dressed as an officer and the "child" was a different species than the fox pretending to be their parental figure, the similarities to Nick and Judy's first meeting early on in Zootopia is still quite uncanny.
  • Popular with Furries: While not as commonly known as other anthropomorphic animal media, it does have a following due to the World of Funny Animals setting.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The voice actor for Robby Lion and Vanderbuilt Gronkle, as well as the second voice of Kenny Bear and Pig Will was Michael Caloz, who would later go on to be the first voice of D.W in Arthur. The voice actress for Sally Cat, Tara Meyer at the same time went on to voice Dorothy Ann on The Magic School Bus.
    • In the final season, Lynnie Raccoon was voiced by a then unknown Tara Strong.
    • Non-voice acting example: one of the animators on the first two direct-to-video releases was John R. Dilworth. Yes, that John R. Dilworth.
    • Also for the direct-to-video releases, once they moved production to Jumbo Pictures, the voice cast naturally contained several actors from Doug, but it also had a young Lacey Chabert. Eden Riegel is also credited for voice work on the Jumbo Pictures videos.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: A 1995 episode of The Busy World of Richard Scarry features an "Imagine That" song about Space Shuttles. NASA retired their Space Shuttle fleet in 2011, 16 years after the episode first aired.
  • Values Dissonance: The original edition of Best Word Book Ever, published in 1963, contains many gender roles that would be considered stereotypical today. For example, on the cover, only a female was seen cooking in the kitchen, and no females could be seen riding the firetruck. The updated edition removed some of these gender stereotypes, such as including a male in the kitchen and adding a female firefighter.
