• Tear Jerker: Janet's depression. Truth in Television for everyone who's ever had a parent suffering from severe mental illness.
  • The bear cubs being captured after their mother is murdered.
• Unintentional Period Piece: The book is very much a product of the early 2000's, namely in that the main characters are initially forced to use public chatrooms before Ned finds a way into an abandoned chatroom where they can talk privately. With the rise of social media sites, this would be a non-issue in the modern day.
