  • Base-Breaking Character: Some liked the levity that Chloe brought, as well as providing a new romantic option for Daniel, while others felt that she was tacked-on, unrealistic, and failed to be as compelling as other characters.
  • Cult Classic: Despite glowing reviews from critics and being SundanceTV's flagship series, the show received dismal ratings due a general lack of traffic in the channel, combined with its extreme slow burn pace and focus on philosophy and navel-gazing, and it was considered a surprise that it was greenlit for even four seasons. However, it's considered one of the best modern shows by critics and its fanbase alike.
  • Epileptic Trees: There are some fans who believe, either jokingly or not, that Amantha killed Hanna Dean and only worked so hard to free Daniel out of guilt, knowing that her beloved big brother was going to prison for a crime she committed. The fact that she only was 11-12 at the time it happened is only a slight dissuasion.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • "The Source" has a few, very welcome moments.
      • Amantha bringing donuts and fritters over at Daniel's farewell, leading Daniel and Janet to playfully try to accost her.
      • Janet and Daniel's road trip in general: a happy day at the beach, a dance during dinner, and general much-needed alone time between mother and son.
      • Amantha, Teddy, and Jared bonding.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: For a dark sense of humor; fans of The Walking Dead will find it hard not to think of Michael Traynor's exit from that series when Georgie commits suicide.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Teddy shows signs of this, especially as he gradually loses arrogance after Tawney leaves him.
  • Narm: Daniel wisely telling Tawney (in a dream) in season three that "God is a tree frog." It's supposed to be a deep, philosophical statement, but it does sound kind of silly. And yet still, it fits perfectly into Daniel's character.
  • Strangled by the Red String: The introduction of new love interests for Daniel and Amantha in Season 4 led to some complaints of this (moreso with Chloe, who was criticized for being a somewhat weak character whose main purpose was helping to bring Daniel out of his shell), especially as it was already announced that it was the final season, and the sudden pushing of new love interests often felt a bit rushed. Especially considering none of them end up together.
  • The Woobie: Daniel. It's hard to watch the series and not want to protect this grown man and worry over him.
  • Woobie Family: The Holden/Talbot clan in general.
