YMMV / Rebirth of Mothra 3

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Toshiyuki Watanabe's score is easily the best part of the whole film, aside from Ghidorah.
  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Contrary to popular belief, this version of King Ghidorah is not Grand King Ghidorah and is never addressed as such in the film.
  • Character Rerailment: After 33 years of being on a downward scale of threat and independence, getting reduced to each new alien race's Psycho for Hire, and eventually ending up as just another of Godzilla's many foes rather than the nigh-unstoppable powerhouse he originally was, King Ghidorah's back to being The Juggernaut and The Dreaded as well as being an independent villain (with Belvera not even trying to control him) whose sole reason to cause destruction and misery on planets is to amuse himself.
  • Complete Monster: King Ghidorah was a spacefaring Draconic Abomination inimical to all life, as well as a Child Hater of truly spectacular proportions. Upon arriving in Japan, Ghidorah not only tried to obliterate major metropolitan centers, but kidnapped every child on the island, intending to eat their souls. Mothra journeyed to the past and slew a weaker version of the dragon who, during his first visit to Earth in the Cretaceous Period, was responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs, only to discover that in the present, Ghidorah is still alive and well. Returning to Earth again, Ghidorah continues with his plan to leave the planet a lifeless husk, starting with the children.
  • Fan Nickname: Grand King Ghidorah for this specific version of the space dragon.
  • Moral Event Horizon: While kidnapping children to eat is pretty dang nasty, King Ghidorah at least was using them for food. While he was waiting for them to be ready to eat, however, he decides to spend his time ravaging cities For the Evulz. What makes this stand out is it highlights how absolutely unnecessary it was for King Ghidorah to do so, as he already got his main objective without doing any damage at all to the world within a short time of his arrival, so his rampage is nothing more than him having fun.
  • Retroactive Recognition: A suit actor variant. King Ghidorah was played by Tsutomu Kitagawa who go on to play Godzilla multiple times throughout the Millennium Series starting with Godzilla 2000.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Considered by many to be the best of the Rebirth films thanks to the addition of a rerailed King Ghidorah as the sole main antagonist, more exciting action scenes, a still-excellent score and amazing special effects on the monsters as well as a perceived deserved power-up for Mothra Leo.
  • Ugly Cute: Cretaceous Ghidorah is simply adorable with his awkward chicken walk!
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Even many detractors of the film admit the King Ghidorah suit looks absolutely amazing and it remains a fan favorite design for the character for its powerful and menacing appearance.
