YMMV / Re:Monster

  • Base-Breaking Character: Rou himself. Outside of his unique (and ever changing) appearance for a Light Novel protagonist, it's hard to ignore the many overpowered aspects he shares with many light novel protagonists such as Kirito and the like. He's absurdly strong and stacks abilities that have become almost too many to count, is rarely (if ever) in actual danger or backed into a corner, and practically beds and romances EVERY NAMED FEMALE CHARACTER and several unnamed ones, who all seemingly have no problems with being his concubines or sharing him collectively amongst themselves. Fans are split on whether this makes him a boring wish fulfillment sue character, or an interesting look at an overpowered main character who lacks the typical goody goody nature of light novel protagonists before him (case in point him collectively loving all of the women in his life over picking one and the other women doing little than pining for him the rest of the series like certain other light novel stories)
    • In another sense, Rou's personality in general. Is his Warlord Lite personality an interesting differentiation from typical Nice Guy protagonists, or a cop out that gives him all of the qualities of a warlord character (such as his loving harem) but lacking the more negative and villainous aspects (aka the kidnapping and raping that typically happens with characters like this).
    • And then there is the point were he actually did engage in the type of rape a warlord character would engage in (see below).
  • Broken Base: Rou's punishment to the elves he captured. Was it a justified action, a Laser-Guided Karma to the haughty Elves, an act of "mercy", a heinous crime, a hypocritical thing to do or he went too far, etc? No matter your opinion, just mentioning that scene in the series will cause fans to either defend or decry what Rou did. There are also people who argue for and against the setting being a factor as well, being a High Fantasy World rather than a modern one.
