YMMV / RWBY: Grimm Eclipse

  • Broken Base: The Team JNPR DLC really annoyed the player base. Some players believed that five dollars for four characters is way too much, especially since the game has other modes for free. In fact, there are some players who thought that they should have received the DLC for free because they bought it before the price drop. Others point out that 5 dollars isn't that bad in terms of DLC, that Team JNPR plays very differently from Team RWBY and that this is new game content, seeing as the game started out as a fan game at first and was never intended to have JNPR around. Furthermore, Team JNPR was well received due to each member's individual skills and perks. Players consider them a great addition to the game that encourages the multiplayer mode and overall makes the game more enjoyable. However, what irks some of the fans is that it was Team JNPR who achieved this status instead of the titular Team RWBY which is also the only playable team unless you buy the DLC.
  • Complete Monster: Dr. Merlot is a scientist who is obsessed with the Grimm, believing that their neverending rage and strength make them the superior species. In his desperation to study them, Merlot attracted Grimm to the Mountain Glenn settlement; this eventually led to the fall of the city, with the countless citizens within being massacred by the Grimm. Those who fled underground were slaughtered as well, resulting in the "world's largest tomb". Surviving the fall, Merlot continues his research into augmenting the Grimm to be even more dangerous, eventually releasing these specimens without caring about the potential damage. When Team RWBY track him down and defeat his Grimm, Merlot decides to detonate the facility in the hopes that he can kill them alongside him.
  • Demonic Spiders: Androids, largely because their attacks have much greater reach than they should. The attack hitbox extends a fair bit beyond the actual graphic of their weapon, making it easy to misjudge whether one is safe. Further, getting hit by two or more at once is almost guaranteeing getting stunlocked to death. If you're trying to create an opening, the Android's attack that can be countered looks exactly the same as the attack that can't, and they have no consistent pattern for using the former.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Most of Ruby's dialogue. She sounds like a kid in a candy store fighting all these Grimm.
      • "Boom! Yeah! Devastation!"
      • "Yeah! Breakin' stuff!"
      • "Let's finish this up quickly, so I can ride on the airship! Yeeeeeeeee!"
    • Oobleck gets some good lines as well.
Oobleck: I'm glad everyone was able to keep their calm, and not explode. That would have made for an uncomfortable parent-teacher conference.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Jaune. Upgrade the increased damage of his Ultimate, play an online match and enjoy the carnage. Your team will easily obliterate just about everything. Even Mutated Beowolves which are considered extremely hard to kill due to their enormous health pools can be defeated before the Ultimate's effect runs out. On top of that, you can duplicate the amount of time the effect lasts and increase how many uses you can save.
    • Also Nora, due to her Power Surge skill, which doubles her damage whenever she lands multiple hits. Not only do the hits count even if they're against breakable objects instead of enemies, but getting enough hits to activate the skill is laughably easy.
    • And there's also Yang with her Second Wind skill, which refills her entire Ultimate bar whenever her Aura is depleted. Combine that with the quick aura regeneration skill, both extra ultimate bars, and a maxed out ultimate, and she will become a very effective character.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Oobleck's line about how uncomfortable it would've been to discuss the player(s)'s death to their parents is funny in its own way... unless you're playing as Ren or Nora.
  • The Problem with Licensed Games: The empty and overly-spacious environments, followed by the bland and shallow combat system (Remember: This is a game based off an animated web series that prides itself with its over the top fight scenes), tedious grinding, unfair difficulty and railroading level progression has left fans declaring indifference or hate for the game. The fact that the show never mentions the events of the game (despite it release around the same time as Volume 3) combined with Lusus Naturae, the game's main vocal theme, being easily accessible on the Volume 4 soundtrack means that there is no real reason to play this game or the Definitive Edition outside of sheer curiosity (and that's if you can stomach the steep price tag).
  • Special Effect Failure: The explosion effect when Dr. Merlot's base self-destructs at the end of the game was very badly-rendered in the initial release and must have been an Obvious Beta, as it was patched out and replaced with a more effective cutscene just a week later.
  • Surprise Difficulty: At a glance, it's a Hack and Slash game, reminiscent of Koei's various Warriors series. If you go into it with that mindset, however, you will be quite surprised to find that there's no tutorial, no move-list, and the second type of enemies you encounter - appearing in great numbers in the very first level - can kill you in two hits. On the lowest difficulty. After the first few surprise deaths, you may feel compelled to go back to the main menu to check that you didn't set the difficulty to 'Chaos' by accident...
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The removal of many elements and the changes to the remaining ones were not well-received, though the worst has to be the infamous grinding in the game.
  • Uncertain Audience: RWBY fans will certainly get a kick out of it for extra background lore and character interactions, but to the average consumer? All they see is a mess of different gameplay styles haphazardly mixed together. Is it a MOBA because of the branching upgrade paths and ranks (as well as Hoarde Mode)? Is it supposed to be a team-based game with how much emphasis it puts on multiplayer? Is the combat system supposed to be reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors? The melee/gun combo gameplay could remind people of Devil May Cry, but the fighting is too limiting to be a stylish hack-and-slash like those games, and the Arkham-style counters doesn't do them any favors at all.
