• He Really Can Act: The movie was consistently savaged by critics upon release, but many of them found Michael Moriarty's act as Jimmy a pretty good role. One of them infamously even told that to Larry Cohen's face, with Cohen answering "the dreck [that you just saw] was my idea".
• Love to Hate: Jimmy is a colossal asshole — he's selfish, a coward, abusive, and greedy to the point of allowing innocent people to die in order to get a payday — but Michael Moriarty's charisma and the sheer gall of how much of an irresponsible jerkass his character is loops back into making a hilariously entertaining Villain Protagonist.
• Nightmare Fuel:
  • The human victims of the Cultist that were skinned alive, and show onscreen in their full bloody glory.
  • The baby Quetzalcoatl being blasted with machine gun fire just as it hatches. Even for a monster, it's pretty disturbing to watch.
