YMMV / Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Loboto gets some due to his Dark and Troubled Past—how much of his insanity comes from his botched lobotomy, and how much from his true nature? His memories imply he heard his parents planning the lobotomy well in advance. Did he not know what was going to happen? Or did he know, and was unable to stop it from happening? Maybe, as a third option, he didn't want to stop it...
  • Awesome Music: The James Bond-esque opening theme.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Behind the stage curtain, the skeletons of the members of All Paul can be found behind the glass, still posing fabulously.
  • Cry for the Devil: Before Rhombus of Ruin, Loboto was just a funny dentist who didn't have much in the way of backstory other than that he was Oleander's partner in crime. When this game revealed his backstory, many players found themselves expressing sympathy for the poor doctor.
  • Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: The game can be beaten in about an hour, but offers some interesting details to the setting of Psychonauts, along with the fact that at the time of its release in 2017, it was the first official new story in the franchise in a little over a decade.
  • Ho Yay: One of the drawings made by the guards shows Oleander with his arm around two of the All Paul members with hearts floating around them.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: One of the biggest complaints about the game is that it's incredibly short, especially for the price of 20 dollars - if you know what you're doing, you can beat it in just over an hour.
  • Tear Jerker: Loboto's childhood was not a happy one. Anyone whose parents send them off to get lobotomized because of their psychic powers while calling them "little monster" and "devil child" can't have had a happy childhood.
    • This can hit especially hard for players with mental disabilities whose parents treated them poorly as a result. One of Loboto's memories is of his parents arguing over him bending spoons with his mind with Loboto's father giving a cruel Hope Spot by saying that Loboto "Is our son". Given one of the possible roots of the myth of Changelings, his mother's "Is he?" bites hard.
    • What's sadder is both parents are clearly voiced by Loboto himself putting on voices, to the point where the subtitles refer to them as Loboto (Mom) and Loboto (Dad). He remembers what they said about him and what they did to him, but he can't remember their voices anymore.
